Unique Bass instruction DVD

This DVD covers material that I have not found in any other instructional material - covering how to get the tone you want, from how you approach the bass with your plucking hand, to demonstrating how different EQ settings effect the tone. There is also a vert nice demonstration of the different bass types and their core tones - and each type is demonstrated. Information I really would have liked before I bought my first bass.

Within hours of watching the first section I was able to approach my gear in a new way that enabled me to get closer to the tone I wanted to hear.

Video demonstrations in a live band setting are also unique and informative.

Four community conflicts in the Bay Area from the 1960s to the 1990s illustrate these changes.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, freeways and rapid transit have brought city and suburb closer together. Local residents have resisted these changes that threaten their communities' original identities. In San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose and Concord, residents have clashed over the construction of freeways and rapid transit, urban and suburban redevelopment, affirmative action, and modern art. In each locality, rapid changes produced conflict over local identities, as white, black, and Chicano residents have attempted to maintain a clear distinction between urban and suburban culture in the face of forces that are driving city and suburb closer together.

Rodriguez tells us that edge cities are no longer the center of the urban debate, but rather, as suburbs become more urban, the urban core is becoming more suburban. The paradox is that out of this rearticulation of the city an entirely new form of urbanism is emerging that is on the one hand highly homogeneous, but on the other hand is shaped by local history and the ethnic configuration of cities.

He describes the discovery of rapid eye movement - REM - during the 1950s, and shows how this discovery initiated the creation of 'dream laboratories' that later emerged as centres for sleep research during the 1960s and 1970s. Why has this book not been reviewed and appreciated more widely? It's an astonishing achievement -- an intellectual history of research into sleep's mysteries, going back to ancient Greece and moving all the way up to the sleep labs of the late 20th century. Kroker's central questions are quite simple: how did it come to be that people visit labs to have their sleep examined? And how did sleep become an object of scientific knowledge? But the answers require a very long view and a sure grasp of medical and scientific history, philosophy, technological change, and the social contexts of research. He gives us numerous portraits of sleep's pioneers, with some fascinating juxtapositions -- such as setting Bergson alongside Freud, and the development of the EEG in Cold War context -- along the way. Absolutely first-rate history.

Horrible book, drones on endlessly an uninformatively. The index to the book is garbage. Don't buy, and don't consider using this to teach a class, please.

The index is seemingly formatted by a child. For a 500-something page book, the index is 4 pages long of 18 pt. font. So many topics are missing, and words point to the wrong pages. Pathetic and extremely frustrating.

About the Author
Pete Mefford was born in Tennessee at the time that the nation was dealing with the Great Depression and preparing for World War II. Raised by paternal grandparents, with minimum parental involvement, he earned a scholarship to a local boy's prep school and then Vanderbilt University. Coming from a poor background and with a severe stuttering problem, he, nevertheless, aspired to be a leader in business. After five years in Information Technology, he joined Ross Perot's EDS and eventually rose to senior executive ranks. During more than thirty years in business, he learned and taught the practical application of leadership which he reveals in this book. He and his wife are retired and live near Austin, Texas.

After a very unusual upbringing and ambitious professional career, Pete does an excellent job of interweaving his life and professional experiences in both revealing and interesting ways. Determination, perseverance, dedication, loyalty, hard working, loving, resilience, and many more terms could be used to describe the characteristics of the author's approach to life. Every person on earth has a story to tell - and Pete tells his in an interesting, entertaining, highly readable and instructive manner.

A Very readable and enjoyable leadership handbook. The book takes you through the life and career of an EDS executive, sharing moments of doubt as well as moments of achievement and success. It is done with humor and humility and includes many important leadership tips ..... some learned the hard way. The book tells the story of one man who had a goal and drove towards it even when events seemed positioned to thwart it repeatedly and in ways that seemed unfair. It also gives the reader a glimpse into the growth and success of an amazing company and the people who made it possible.
