In this book a new and distinctive approach to the science-religion debate emerges from a synthesis of the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition with phenomenological thought. Developing ideas of Greek Patristics the author treats faith, with its sense of the Divine presence, and knowledge of the universe, as two modes of communion which constitute the human condition. The modern opposition between science and theology (which is historically paralleled with the Church’s split between East and West, and monasticism and Christianity in the world), is treated as the split between two intentionalities of the overall human subjectivity. The human person, as a centre of their reconciliation, becomes the major theme of the dialogue between science and theology. It is argued that the reconciliation of science and theology is not simply an academic exercise; it requires an existential change, a change of mind (metanoia), which cannot be effected without ecclesial involvement. Then the person who effectuates the mediation between science and theology is raised to the level of “cosmic priesthood” while the mediation acquires the features of a “cosmic Eucharist” in which all divisions and tensions in creation and humanity are removed.� It is through this existential change accompanied by phenomenological analysis that scientific theories can be subjected to a certain “vision” through which the hidden ultimate goal (telos) of scientific research (as the explication of the human condition) shows its kinship to the saving telos advocated by Christian faith. The opposition between theology and science is thus being para-eucharistically overcome.

About the Author
NIKOLAI BRANDAL is a PhD fellow at the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History, University of Oslo, Norway. His doctoral research concerns political extremism in the 1960s and 70s. Alongside a scholarly interest in totalitarian movements, Brandal has published articles and book chapters on the Second World War and post-war Norwegian politics.
�IVIND BRATBERG is a Post-doctoral Researcher at the Department of Political Science, University of Oslo, Norway. His research interests range from British party politics and territorial reform via contemporary social democracy to the analysis of political ideas and discourse.
DAG EINAR THORSEN received his PhD in Political Science from the University of Oslo, Norway in 2012, concluding a research project on the political philosophy of Karl Popper and Isaiah Berlin. He has published a number of articles and book chapters on political theory, ideology and the philosophy of science.

Social democracy -- its principles and applications.

This is a really fine account not only of Nordic
social democracy, but of social democracy generally.
The authors give a pretty complete account of this political-economic outlook, with their analyses of the effects that the principles of this perspective as embedded in the societies they affected. As an introduction to Nordic political-economic thought this could hardly be better. It does require close reading, but then this attention is rewarded with fine insights and helpful perspectives. It bears a second or further reading; still is the only discussion of European social-democratic thought that I know of, and its keen analysis is worth the close attention it requires. I recommend it highly.

Drawn in from the first page

I was given a free ebook version from the author for an honest review and all I have to say is it was very good. I was drawn in from the first page and couldn't put it down. I am now on the sequel to it, Charmed Again, and find it is just as good.

The story plot is good versus evil but with a twist. There is a good love story, because what good book doesn't have that. I won't reveal the end but it is worth reading. Every little twist and turn in the book made me not able to put it down and I found myself staying up way longer than I should just to see what happened next.

Lindy Zart is now my new favorite author!

I got this book a couple weeks ago for my Kindle. It took interesting enough, so I put it up towards the top of my "TO READ" list (some books end up on the list for years). Finally, about a week after I got it, I decided to read it. It helped that I was heckled by Tawnya. I read the first paragraph and sighed - convinced I just got myself into some silly teen drama that I'd have to force myself to read. I'll admit, I put off reading the book for a couple days because of it. ...but then I started it. Actually started it.

One word to explain what happened once I passed page one: DAMN. That's right, I said it. I had to force myself to put the book down a few times, because I swear I stopped breathing in certain parts. (Lindy Zart is obviously trying to kill me, just want you all to know this)

All and all, it was a great story. Truly it was. I was able to get into the characters, and I liked them. They felt real.

Still Charmed!

I received this book as a gift in February by the author and I still find myself thinking about it. I so enjoyed all the characters, Taryn, Creed and Luke. The character Taryn was entertaining and I loved her spunkiness and comical side. The other two otherworldly characters Creed and Luke had their own agenda which included Taryn and the battle between good and evil ensues. Charmed was a constant page turner and was hard to put down. Once I finished reading Charmed, I quickly purchased the second installment Charmed Again! I highly recommend this paranormal novel. P.S., I developed a soft spot for Creed.

A wonderful group of books, amazing information. Sitchin lays it all out so beautifully. A must read for anyone who our history without the narrow minded mainstream indoctrination. Real Science, real history... I have read all of these books and find myself picking them up again for a second read.

Ricoeur is one of the major French philosophers of the 20th century. In these essays, originally delivered as lectures at the Institute for the Human Sciences at Vienna, he endeavors to connect the various senses of recognition. We speak, for instance, of recognizing physical objects, recognizing other people, recognizing our responsibility for actions, and being recognized by others. Ricoeur finds a transition from an active to a passive voice in these various senses of the verb to recognize and organizes his discussion around this transition. He begins by focusing on the knowledge of objects, with a careful account of Immanuel Kant’s move away from the substantial self of René Descartes. He then considers Henri Bergson’s notion of memory and moves on to an analysis of mutual recognition that heavily stresses the discussions of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. With his characteristic erudition, Ricoeur also surveys the views of sociologist and anthropologist Marcel Mauss as well as those of his successors and critics. He displays a remarkable ability to convey sympathetically the ideas of a widely disparate group of thinkers and makes an excellent case, in readily comprehensible language, for the centrality of recognition in modern philosophy. In the course of this trajectory, Ricoeur makes connections between authors and philosophical themes, stretching over a vast area of time and subject. This rich book gives one a path through much of Ricoeur’s work on language, narration, memory and the self; but it also shows the deep connections between so many disparate discussions. Who would have thought that reading Marcel Mauss could illuminate Mandela and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission? Who could have seen the connections between the modern rage for objectification and the occultation agency, ipse-identity, narrative, dialogicality, and a host of other issues? As with Ricoeur at his best, it suggests a number of wholly different ways of thinking our way through the major questions of modern philosophy. (Charles Taylor, author of Sources of the Self)

The book is one of Ricoeur’s last works (he died in 2005), and it fittingly recapitulates many of the themes he explored over his long career. But that is how his books proceed: retaining the results of his earlier studies, yet always reevaluating them in light of new ideas and discoveries. Ricoeur exemplifies a desire to learn from others, whatever their discipline, and this book exhibits the unique blend of tenacity, charity, and modesty that characterizes his thought in general. The hermeneutics of the self that Ricoeur presents here is a major contribution to reflection about the capabilities that are constitutive of the self. A humanist of immense learning, a scholar of both literature and the human sciences (as is evident from Seuil’s three-volume edition of his lectures), a traveler receptive to Anglo-Saxon culture and German tradition, Paul Ricoeur is difficult to identify with a single school or intellectual current. Christianity, phenomenology, hermeneutics, psychoanalysis, linguistics, and history have all to some extent shaped his thought. But if his ideas are, in essence, most closely allied with Christian existentialism and with personalism, they cannot easily be reduced to a system. It seems that [for Ricoeur] the study of language, far from being an end in itself, was always just another way of asking the questions that long preoccupied him: those of being and of action. Nostalgic for an ontology that Nietzsche seemed to have invalidated, striving to find rules for moral conduct in ethical reasoning, deeply concerned about the age he lived in yet at the same time wary of engaged action, Ricoeur ultimately incarnated―and reflected the most radical consequences of―the wrenching contradictions that have characterized humanist thought since the early twentieth century. This tragic authenticity, which illuminates the entire span of his long intellectual journey, also makes his writings exemplary evidence of the ‘crisis’ of our modernity. And it is no doubt this value as ‘evidence’ that explains why his corpus of work―which was (like the work of his friend Emmanuel Levinas) to some extent misunderstood by French intellectuals―has, since the mid-1980s, attracted renewed interest in France and even more in the rest of the world.
