Good Book

Interesting indeed. The first few chapters are a bit dry. Ms. King delivers a great argument but I believe it would have been better presented if she would have given a brief lesson on the symbolism so readers can follow her thesis. I liked it, it's a bit complicated for the novice to understand but overall, a good read.

The Reluctant Matchmaker

When 31 year-old Meena literally falls for the CEO of her company she think she may finally found a way to escape the matchmakers of her family. When Parjay requests a private meeting the last thing the petite Meena expected was a request for her help in finding him a six foot plus bride. Bantwal as as always is a great story teller. She creates relate-able characters and gives the reader a look into the Indian-American experience where the younger American born generation can get caught trying to find a balance between the two cultures.

In Princeton Junction, New Jersey, pint-sized marketing and public relations manager Meena Shenoy is excited over her upcoming first meeting with her boss Prajay Nayak, the CEO and president of Rathnaya, Inc. Eighty-five pounds when dripping wet Meena never expected to meet her employer when they collide. She sprains her ankle as her body felt like a truck ran over it. However, it is her mind that is discombobulated as she now understands what her mom means in her native language Konkani when she says nasheeba kheloo (destiny's game).

Prajay tells Meena that at thirty-nine his family expects him to marry as his siblings are married with kids; they wonder if he might be gay; a thought that Meena had too. Meena commiserates as her family wants her to wed soonest and is upset over who her brother is seeing. He asks Meena to write an ad in the matrimonial columns of a few select India-American newspapers and websites with a key requirement that she be at least six feet tall educated Hindu with a sense of humor. Stunned, as she wants to be the chosen one, Meena works on finding her boss a spouse though she wished he would look down to her.

The Reluctant Matchmaker is a fabulous fun frolic starring two likable protagonists while providing readers with a close look at the Indian-American culture, which mingles tradition from the old country with modern technology and the ways of the new country. The storyline reads like a 1930s madcap comedy in a Bollywood-New Jersey setting as Shobhan Bantwal provides an enjoyable contemporary romance

A great Match for Summer Reading!

"Matchmaker, Matchmaker make me a match......" is not the song running thru Meena's head when she runs into (literally!) her boss. She sprains her ankle, gets carried (by him) to his office where she spends the rest of the day on his couch resting. While she misses the whole thing he also carried her to his car and hauls her home. A very compassionate employer. What she didn't miss is that he is 6'5" and she is five foot even if she stretches. He is HUGE for an Indian man and a bit intimidating.
Meena, PR person for Prajay Nayak's firm and the newest employee soon falls - and hard - for him. Her parents and aunts are trying weekly to set her up as she is past marrying age in their culture and is trying to be independent which is quite annoying to them. Meena turns down everyone or, after one date has found the man was not her type. This was happening before she met Prajay and now is worse. She tries, she really tries but they aren't him.
To make matters worse, Prajay is being harassed by his own family since he is nearly forty and single. He has an idea that, by hiring Meena to find him a potential wife; it will cut down the chaos of dating. She agrees, reluctantly and begins breaking her own heart with the task. He wants a smart woman who is 6' tall. Amazing how many Indian women are out there who fit his requirements. Meena isn't one of them. And then her aunt Akka shows up on the doorstep. Her brother falls in love - with a Muslim and chaos ensues.
Obsession with size, misclues and failed dates populate this wonderful novel. The author has written five other books which I am currently looking for because this was a nice book. No cursing, no hard drugs nor alcohol. Just a fantastic story about a young Indian woman trying to find her way in a culture centuries old while not losing herself in the process. Go get it. NOW!

Biased Biography with Ulterior Motives

Though extensive and seemingly exhaustive in its details and depth of research, almost half of the 600 pages is devoted to hammering it into our heads the fact that Coco Chanel was a fascist Nazi sympathizer. Garelick attempts to subtly separate Coco Chanel the fascist woman from Chanel the powerhouse fashion brand of today, so as not to offend the current owners nor damage their profits in any way.
The author easily glosses over the fact that Coco had to gain the favor of the Nazis in order to rescue her nephew (or most likely son), who was dying in Nazi captivity and whom she loved dearly. The author quickly glosses over the fact that the Wertheimers royally screwed Coco by setting up their own, separate Chanel corporation in America during the war, and profited enormously from perfume sales, all the while sharing none of it with the woman herself.
The first thing Garelick does is insinuate that the interlocking C logo is a fascist symbol much like the swastika, and how Coco's own fascist tendencies enabled her fashion brand to dominate. There are a good twenty pages or so where the author lectures the reader on fascism and the evils of the German Nazis. It is repetitive, completely unnecessary, and only serves Garelick's purpose in imprinting a very negative image of Coco in the readers' minds. Many of those who were wealthy or had much to lose during the war were Nazi sympathizers, including the British royal family and almost everyone in the upper echelons of European society, but the particularly harsh focus of the author on Coco, as well as Garelick's own personal insinuations (which she weaves in many paragraphs stealthily) on Coco’s thoughts or motives, are just plain annoying.
The real motive of this biography is to shame, denigrate, and disparage Coco Chanel the woman, while simultaneously praising and building respect for the house of Chanel under the Wertheimer ownership. I do not recommend this book, and feel that it portrays a very strong woman who overcame incredible tragedies and obstacles in a purposefully negative light. It is not an unbiased, objective biography.

Unexpectedly, a page-turner!

I thought I knew this story; as they say, 'I saw the movie...' But I didn't know the half of it. Reading on, I found myself staying up later and later, dying to know what Coco would do next. I was particularly struck by Garelick's meticulous research -- her apt contextualizing of historical events and convincing use of new information about Gabrielle Chanel's friends, to show how they affected the haute-couture designer's constantly-evolving, increasingly mercurial persona. The last third of the book makes for disturbing reading. We watch Chanel as her dynamic charisma becomes manic grandiosity and she slips into sadistic madness without, apparently, losing her innate creative genius. She may not have been lovable (though many loved her) but Coco Chanel is an utterly unforgettable character -- the perfect heroine for a vampire movie. Without revealing any of the book's dramatic surprises, let me particularly recommend the passage where she spends several hours alone with the corpse of her ambivalently-loved friend Misia Natanson-Edwards-Sert. One thought -- I read the book on my paper-white Kindle, which cannot do justice to its many illustrations. The images are important to understanding the character, who in her own way was a visual artist. If you can, buy the physical book.

Tediously Thorough

Extremely well researched and minutely detailed in seemingly every aspect of Chanel's life. I began to find it tedious by only one-third finished, even though I have read many lengthier biographies. My loss of interest is not as much the fault of the author's as my previous ignorance of Chanel's extreme Nazi leanings that completely disenchanted me from learning more about her and will forever keep me from purchasing or using her empire's products.

About the Author
Bhakti Mathur, private banker by day, mother to Shiv and Veer (seven and five years old) and an avid delver in Indian mythology at all other times is the creator of the ‘Amma Tell Me’ books―a series of picture books about Indian festivals and mythology for children in the three to nine year age group. She wrote and self-published her first book, “Amma Tell Me About Holi!” in 2011 and over the next 3 years, the series has grown with books on the festival of Diwali, the Hindu epic Ramayana and stories about the Hindu gods, Krishna, Ganesha and Hanuman.“The real motivation for writing the ‘Amma Tell Me’ series was to share with my sons the fascinating stories from Indian mythology that I had grown up with,” says Bhakti. “But, I found that there were no resources that were simple to understand and that captured the rich imagery of mythological India that is such an integral part of these stories for me. So I went ahead and started writing the stories in a style that I think kids find fun and non-preachy and collaborated on the illustrations to bring out the imagery that I want my stories to convey.”Bhakti grew-up in Delhi. She studied at Modern School Vasant Vihar. She obtained her graduate degree in Economics and her post graduate degree in Finance from Delhi University. She is a CFA charter holder. Beautiful illustrations and (I think) appropriate for most ages

I have a toddler who absolutely loves mythological stories. While we gently tried introducing him to Amar Chitra Katha (which was one of my own childhood favorites) we knew that stories and illustrations were geared toward an older child.

When I looked online for more age appropriate stories to read to a toddler and help him retain his love for mythology, I discovered this book from Bhakti Mathur. First, the parents love it. The rhyming nature of the story caught my tot's attention and he seems very interested in following the story to the end.

Hopefully this will now replace our bed time reading until he's old enough to get back to the Amar Chitra Katha comic books.

Relatable and Colorful!

Both my 7 and 5 year old girls love this book. They ask me to read it to them often before bed. I love how the author has taken well-known tales and made them easy to understand by children. The colorful and sweet pictures of all the characters really help make them relatable and keep the interest of the kids.

A Must Read

My daughters aged 3 and 2 love Amma...Every night I get a request to read them the part where Krishna colours Radha!! Mama, can we read Amma now?
I was so pleasantly surprised with the book- the rhyming script and the illustrations are superb.

There is such a dearth of of good Indian authors writing books for young children that I can't wait for the author to publish a whole series about the various Indian festivals. Will be on the look out.

I definitely recommend that anyone with young kids or even older kids for that matter interested in Indian mythology buy this book. it educated me on some of the facts a bouts Holi as well..

Extensive discussion is given to the Cherokee and Chickamauga Indians, the rise of conflict between their people and the white settlers and government, and their eventual removal west. Included are many biographical sketches of Indians who were influential in the area, with an entire chapter devoted to Chief John Ross.

I don't like the way the 'other author?' - Stadler - is missing from this edition.
I very much like the way the information is presented to the reader and the content.

This is the book for my "Introduction to Electronic Mass Media" class. It is VERY boring to read. The professor seldom refers to it, maybe 3 or 4 times in class. However, there are some very good sections, that even though they aren't interesting, they are useful. An example is the 2 sections on semiotics. There is an entire chapter that can be used as a outline for a semiotic analysis, as well as an appendix in the back of the book about a semiotic analysis, with pictures.
One thing that really stands out when you think of books that are used as college textbooks, this one doesn't have vocab words. Though a lot of students hate vocab because it is one more thing for the prof to put on the test, I think that it would be useful in this book because there are a lot of terms (i.e. semiotics, gender codes, etc.) that can be summed up in a sentence or two, so that the student will have a better understand and will be about to follow. It would also be nice to have the terms bold-faced for studying.
There is a lot of information in this book, but it is one of those books that you either have to be really into media or you have to force yourself to read.

The Alienist. A nice, funny satire on insanity. Questions the values and systems of the new psychiatrist or psychologist of the time in Brazil in the 1890's. This isn't a medical or realist story, just a critique of the baselessness of psychiatry and it shows just how "dangerous" it can become. I found it to be wry, humorous, and amusing. Machado De Assis reminds me a bit of Miguel de Cervantes.

Clearly Written Moral Defense

I'm puzzled by the people who claim that this book doesn't offer any defense of anarchism. Surely its main argument - that its the only system of government that can possibly be ethically justified - is defense enough. Indeed, since one assumes ethics are one's highest obligation, one would assume this is the best possible defense - that any alternative would be plain and simply wrong.
In any case, most of the other things people are saying about this book are spot-on. It's clearly-written, engaging, and short. The biggest sticking point for people will be the book's explicit Kantian bent. As a Kantian, I must simply say, "Get over it."

Knocking out Philosphical Cobwebs

First, a disclaimer: this book is not about how some form of anarchism might operate. It is purely theoretical, arguing for "philosophical anarchism" based on the imperitive of not undermining personal autonomy. So don't expect it to defend anarchists in the Spanish Civil War or something. That's not what it is about.
But, the book is excellent. I am no anarchist, but the arguments set forth here are completely convincing. If we value autonomy--and almost everyone claims they do--then these are the necessary conclusions. Wolff's comments on majoritarianism vigorously ring the bell of indisputable truth. This is not what you learned in high school government class.
The book is quite short. The preface is a fun read, as Wolff talks about the how the book came into being, but once the first chapter starts, he is all business. But though it deals almost exclusively with philosophical ideas, it had no problem keeping my attention. A short 80 pages has given me a whole new understanding of the justifcation of government. Consider my philosophical cobwebs knocked out.

It's a moral argument against government...

...not a practical argument for anarchism; which is precisely why (as a reviewer below noted) there are no specifics presented. Indeed, Wolff does not seem to even think anarchism *is* practical.
The title is misleading, as Wolff's essay is not so much apologia for anarchist ideas about social structures, it is in fact an exploration of the apparent paradox between the authority of the state and the moral autonomy of the individual. After running through the arguments for various kinds of representative and direct democracy, Wolff concludes that the only form of government which is morally acceptable (that is, which does not subvert moral autonomy) is 'unanimous direct democracy', which for obvious reasons is not a practical form of government. Wolff concludes that, from the perspective of moral philosophy, anarchism is the only acceptable social arrangement.
Wolff's treatment of the subject was rather illuminating for me, it finally revealed to me why political scientists as a whole do not regard anarchism as an ideology; it is instead considered a moral stance independent of political and economic issues, despite what some people might assert.
I've been thinking a little bit about his arguments, and they all seem sound. But I'm inclined to agree with Wolff's sentiments that even if the authority of the state truly cannot be reconciled with moral autonomy, the alternative is not practical. I was briefly considering pursuing the line of argument that societies as a whole can possess moral autonomy, and that a 'social moral autonomy' would outweigh the individual's moral autonomy. The obvious problem with this argument, though, is that if you accept it, it can make any form of government acceptable.
