Tasting Whiskey: great for novices and know-it-alls

On the front cover of Lew Bryson's Tasting Whiskey, there's a quote from the whiskey writer Charles Cowdery: "I shouldn't say this is the only whiskey book you need, but it probably is." I don't know if I'd go so far, but I will say this much: this is the book you want and need if you're just starting out in whiskey.

Bryson maps the major styles of whiskey, from bourbon to rye to Canadian, from Irish to Scotch to Japanese, and from craft to the various world whiskeys, from growing markets such as India and Taiwan. He describes what sets the various styles apart from one another; so, for example, he details the grains that are in each style, the barrels it's aged in, the climates and warehouses that hold it, and the length of time its aged.

Scotch, for example, is made primarily or exclusively from malted barley; it's aged in used barrels (normally bourbon, but with some sherry and other wine casks tossed in for additional flavor); it ages in a cooler climate that enables longer aging; and it can age for up to 30 years or more without getting too woody.

Bourbon, conversely, is made primarily from corn, with other grains in the mix to add accent flavors; it ages in new oak barrels that impart more woodiness than do scotch's used barrels; it ages in a warmer climate that ages it more rapidly than Scotland's cooler climate; and therefore, it usually reaches its peak at roughly 10-12 years.

Each individual style is different, and Bryson masterfully explains how those differences affect the flavors of the finished product.

Every whiskey drinker starts somewhere. I started with bourbon and moved to scotch and then rye and on to other styles. When I started drinking scotch, I couldn't begin to understand what made it unique until I started reading books that helped me puzzle it all out. Tasting Whiskey is such a book.

Its other strength is the infographics that Bryson uses to illustrate some rather complicated concepts. I write about whiskey, and so I know that it's not always easy to describe, in words, the effects of barrel aging, or how barrel placement in a warehouse affects how quickly or slowly the whiskey ages. Bryson's infographics demonstrate these concepts concisely and thoroughly.

After describing the major styles, Bryson then provides advice on how to drink the stuff, in an enjoyable chapter on water, ice, and cocktails. Is it okay to drink your whiskey with a bit of water? Bryson tells you. On the rocks or neat? He has some answers for that as well. Cocktails? Of course! What I enjoyed about this chapter was how conversational and story-oriented it was. No recipes at all, just a description of how to make a damn good Manhattan or Old Fashioned.

If you're new to whiskey, and you need a friendly guide to the topic, Bryson's book is for you. But if you've been around the block a few times, you'll still find this book to be enjoyable and useful. I learned quite a bit from it.

I was fortunate to meet Lew Bryson at a whiskey dinner which ...

TASTING WHISKEY is a most phenomenal and interesting book. I got a fabulous education reading it. I was fortunate to meet Lew Bryson at a whiskey dinner which he organized and conducted at the Bulls Head Pub in Lititz, PA shortly after I had bought his book. Needless to say I was very excited to know he would be there! Tasting Whiskey is extremely well-researched and detailed. It was one of the most enjoyable books I have read in quite some time. His personal stories and experiences are just nonstop and funny! It was entertaining from beginning to end, and I savored every moment I sat down with it. I believe at times I would only read just a few pages so as to make it last longer. Many times I laughed out loud! The book is very well illustrated with most interesting photographs throughout as well!

I am not an experienced whiskey drinker buy any means but have occasionally enjoyed a good aged Scotch or Irish whisky for quite a few years; usually preferring the older Scotch whiskeys because they were supposedly "better" ones. I learned from reading TW to not be a 'whiskey snob' and just drink the more expensive old, more aged ones, but to keep an open mind and experience the many other less expensive and younger ones out there. Just two nights ago I tried a fairly new whiskey from Ireland from West Cork Distilleries; a relatively inexpensive blended whisky (not the 10 year single malt) and it was quite good! The bar tender opened a brand new bottle for me. At Lew's whiskey dinner which I attended, all 5 pairings with the food were with American Bourbons and whiskeys. They were all delicious!!

The whiskey making process is most complicated, and I now have a much more appreciation and understanding about the many aspects of the making, blending, storage, evaporation, whiskey strengths, barrel sizes, the effects of weather & temperature, collecting, making cocktails and on and on. I truly don't think there is much more you could fit in to a book about whiskey. Lew has been around the country and the world tasting fabulous whiskeys and meeting and getting to know distillers. It's a history book, a technical book and a story book! Anyone who has any interest in whiskey should not be without this book! Congratulations Lew Bryson!!!

Excellent for this beginner, but experienced drinker would like it too

I've been finding myself in situations where Scotch is served lately, and felt at a disadvantage. This book gave me the background, history and understanding I wanted. The writing is clear and entertaining.... It's like being taught by a favorite uncle. It's probably a great book for non-beginners, too. It goes into considerable depth about all 5 whiskey countries: their history, distilling process, and characteristics. I was never bored, and will refer to this book into the future. Highly recommend!

Grade 3-6-- This picture book account of the first part of the ancient epic retains the main characters and events of the story that is Mesopotamia's claim to literary fame. The god-king Gilgamesh rules oppressively over the city of Uruk. The people cry to the gods for relief, which comes in the form of a wild man named Enkidu. Gilgamesh sends a temple woman, Shamhat, to lure Enkidu from the wilderness. He returns with her to the city, where he fights Gilgamesh and the two men become best friends. There are alterations (e.g., Shamhat is no longer a courtesan who seduces Enkidu, but a city favorite who falls in love with him, Gilgamesh no longer subdues Enkidu but falls off a wall and is saved by him) as well as additions and deletions. Granted, there are several versions of the story, but the reteller does not note that this is a rather free adaptation of the "standard" text. Though padding the Shamhat role seems more than a little anachronistic, the dramatic choices usually work well, setting up the rivalry/friendship that propels the rest of the epic (to be continued in two future volumes). Unfortunately, the telling lacks the feel of the ancient poetry; the cadences of oral tradition with its repetition and vivid description needn't have been sacrificed. The full-color illustrations, however, capture that ancient aura wonderfully well. Spreading horizontally and dominating the page, they incorporate elements from Sumerian, Assyrian, and Babylonian art. They remain rich and lively--sometimes almost cartoonlike--imparting a sense of personality and landscape. Bernarda Bryson's Gilgamesh (Harcourt, 1967; o.p.) retells the complete epic in more evocative language, but the ratio of text to illustrations is much greater, making it less accessible. Wonderful Series!

We really appreciate the beauty of this series of books as it covers "The Epic of Gilgamesh" in an appropriate and accessible way for our children. We love to use actual historic documents in our study if possible, but the actual epic is too uncomfortably graphic even for our older children, so we use these for everyone as we study Mesopotamia, Sumer and Babylon. There are not many books that cover these Near East cultures, which makes this set especially valuable. Along with "Our Young Folks' Josephus" as our history spine, "Science in Ancient Mesopotamia" and "Ancient Egyptians and their Neighbors: An Activity Guide (covering Hittites, Nubians, Mesopopotamians and Egyptians) this series helps considerably to round out our ancient history studies and to teach our children about one of the most ancient tales in the world in a beautifully engaging way.

Gilgamesh the King by Ludmila Zeman

This is a fantastic version of the Epic of Gilgamesh -- for children, ages 4 - 12. The illustrations are colorful and very similar to the Sumerian/Babylonian style of art. The recounting is easy for children to follow. I bought it for my 7 year old but my four year old was riveted. There are other more thorough versions around but this is a great one for a beginner. Make sure you buy all 3 books in the series to get the whole epic, the other two being The Revenge of Ishtar and The Last Quest of Gilgamesh.

Timeless story and exquisite illustration

My children and I are beginning a study of ancient civilizations and I bought the three Gilgamesh books to expand our coverage of ancient Sumer. These books are just amazing! The story itself is powerful but I wondered how the author was going to tone down some of the violence; not to mention the fact that Shamat was a prostitute in other versions. Ludmilla Zeman has brought this story to children with intensity and grace that comes as a complete surprise. I especially liked her painting of the chaste kiss between Shamat and Enkidu with the explanation that Shamat taught Enkidu to speak and together they explored the ways of love. Very tender.
In her illustrations, Ludmilla Zeman has made an attempt to incorporate actual historical artifacts. These are all high-quality books in every sense and I cannot recommend them highly enough.

Where there is no Psychiatrist: a useful text for those dealing with mental illness in a 3rd world setting

I am a family phyician who teaches introductory Medical Psychology at Hope Africa Medical School in Burundi. This is an excellent introductory book for medical students, nursing students and for others who might deal with mental illlness (social workers, village health workers, pastors). It gives general principles and symptoms and discusses what can cause them. Short case vinettes are often presented. It is very easy for someone who is not familiar with mental illness and substance abuse to understand it, even if their first language is not English. My students read the book, practice interviewing each other and understand it. Difficult subjects like the difference between delerium and dementia are also presented. One chapter deals with mental health issues in various groups like prisoners, refugees, homeless etc. This chapter really brings things home to them and covers things that much larger psychiatric texts may skip. It is socially and clinically very revelant. It would be useful for anyone feeling unprepared to deal with mental illness. I hope that it will soon be translated into Spanish and French.

A good accompaniment to Where There is No Doctor and Where There is No Dentist, both essentials for the rural health care worker. There is emphasis on non-drug related treatments for mental illness but drug treatments are also mentioned.

Dealing with Mental Illness for the Community Health Worker

This book is designed primarily for community health professionals in developing nations. As a longtime owner of Where There is No Doctor, I bought this book hoping it would be as useful and enlightening as "Doctor" was, not only for international situations but even for backcountry situations here in the U.S., or if you are poor and don't have access to medical care here in America.

Physical illness is understood and treated much more readily in international aid and even domestic crises. Most people no matter the culture are much more comfortable dealing with the physically injured than the mentally/emotionally/spiritually injured. People shy away from the mentally ill, not knowing what to do.
Having encountered mentally ill people while in Nigeria in 1996 as well as in various cities in the U.S., I wondered what I might be able to learn by reading this book.

The book begins with an overview of mental illness, including disorders common to all cultures: depression and anxiety, psychoses, special issues with the elderly and children, causation and cultural factors. It then goes on to assessment of a patient, interviews and diagnosis. Treatment options follow, focusing on drug treatments and counseling ("talking treatments").

The next section goes into more depth on clinical problems, such as addressing troublesome behaviors such as violence, aggression, confusion, hearing voices, suicidal tendencies, seizures and fits, postpartum issues, and mental illness among the elderly. It goes on then to look at symptoms such as psychosomatic illness, panic/fear, insomnia, being tired all the time, sexual problems, loss of bodily function, alcoholism and binge drinking, sleeping pill addiction, tobacco and gambling addictions. Next it addresses problems resulting from trauma, such as spouse abuse, rape, or death of a loved one. Problems in childhood and adolescence are looked at, such as childhood development, retardation, ADHD/hyperactivity, child abuse, bed-wetting, and adolescent depression.

One of the most interesting and unique sections of the book is "Mental Health in Other Contexts," such as primary care (focus on prevention rather than cure of disease) and reproductive health... and uniquely, mental illness among prisoners, refugees, in times of disaster, homeless people, street children, and HIV/AIDS. There is also an excellent reminder that healthcare workers must also care for their own mental health.

The author then discusses mental health promotion and advocacy, including creating support groups, prevention of mental retardation, school programs, early identification of illness, prevention of substance abuse, human rights and mental illness, breakdown of relationships, poverty and gender issues.

A special effort is made to give tips on how to adapt the manual for local issues, essential medicines to have on hand, a quick reference guide to medicines for mental illness, and a place where you can write down special resources and contacts for your area in the manual itself. There are flow charts for clinical problem-solving, a glossary of terms, a bibliography and index. Numerous cartoons and illustrations help the readability and engagement with the text.

Overall this is a fantastic resource that was much needed and should be made widely available.

There are some issues that I would like to see expanded in future editions, or perhaps another book:

The paradigm/operating assumption of the book is western biomedicine and western psychology. Although mental illness can have organic causes that are treatable through medication, more recognition needs to be paid to cultural context of mental conditions and working within the cultural paradigms of various cultures.

Different cultures and societies have different definitions of mental illness. For example, being a "were" among the Yoruba of Nigeria, or having susto in Latin America. More attention and recognition should be paid to how western healthcare can successfully collaborate with indigenous healers in the treatment of patients.
And what if you don't have meds? Where There is No Doctor supplied some stopgap solutions when you are really stuck without resources.

Western biomedicine, psychiatry and psychology can learn much from traditional cures and treatments, indigenous knowledge systems, as well as working cooperatively with local healers, spiritual leaders, and other specialists. There are many examples of this in the U.S. in the Indian Health Service, which has a good and still developing record of working with medicine people and healers in caring for patients within traditional systems, including prevention and counseling.

There also needs to be a greater expansion of special issues in times of natural disaster, refugees, etc., including group psychology, mobs, rioting, crime, and devastation. I don't know if there is something like it out there already, but there should be a book specially written just about dealing with mental health in large scale disasters, such as wars, tsunami, earthquakes, epidemics, and societal collapse, in developed or developing countries. The lessons about mental health have yet to be distilled from Katrina in New Orleans, the Asian Tsunami, and the still unfolding tragedy in Haiti.

This book has been a mainstay in Communications Theories courses in universities across America for most of the 21st century thus far, but it hasn't been updated much since its original publication in 2000. For a book that talks about Mass Comm. theories, it still provides a solid foundation as far as the histories of many theories go, but much of Severin and Tankard's commentary on technology (specifically the Internet) is laughably outdated. It makes me wonder how much progress has been made in the field in the 12 years since this book's initial publication.

Buy it if you must, but know that there are more up-to-date resources out there that deserve to bump this dusty tome from its revered position among college faculty.

I'm On The Fence

I purchased this book as required reading for a graduate class. I actually meant to purchase the 5th edition, not the 4th. Still, after comparing my version to the one my professor had, I realized that the only difference between the two seems to be an extra chapter in the 4th edition. While the old theories may not have necessarily changed, I'm sure there are some newer theories or newer ways to apply the old theories. If anything, this book should be updated to include the most recent technology and social media.
