I'll give you a middle of the road assessment

Reading the few reviews of this book you would either think that it stinks or that it is a gift from the gods. Both ideas would be a bit off the mark. In fact, based on the reviews (and the price) I avoided buying it for a while. Until one day during a course in UCLA with fred j. harris I heard him recommend this book. So I bought it.

Here are the bad things about the book, as I see it:

- The price is ridiculous, but hey we all know the racket that the likes of Kluwer Academic Press run, don't we? Hugely over priced academic books for hardbacks with AWFUL typography. You would think that with all the money they are making from us they would have enough to upgrade their printing systems.

- Yes, the book has a couple of error warnings from whatever text editor they used to write this book.

- Yes, it does not LITERALLY tell you how to make OFDM systems work, but, come on guys are you really that literally minded? This criticism may be true but it speaks more of the reader than of the writer.

And now the good stuff:

- Chapters 3, 6, and 7, are worth the price of the book (particularly 6 and 7).

- Chapter 6 on synchronization gives a very good systems view of OFDM. Anybody working on the implementation of OFDM-based real-time systems would profit from it.

- Similarly Chapter 7 on the impact of front-end effects is very good for somebody working on development.

If you are looking for a book to help you with your research topic in school this is not the book for you. But, if you are a DSP or Systems engineer working on the development of a real-time OFDM/OFDMA system, I can assure you that you will appreciate this book at least for the chapters I mentioned.

Professionally Very Poor

I have invested all my efforts to understand what the authors are saying. Oops! I couldn't make it.
The authors have put together very little piece of work (compared with the amount of good work published in various journals/conferences etc), but the title of the book is really flamboyant, proving "much ado about nothing".
I do agree with some people on the review of other OFDM books about the poor FFT/IFFT explaination in this book. The book does not even have a nice system model which the readers can follow. Throughout the book, the authors provided only a birds-eye-view of the problem and the solutions (in all aspects of the system design). No analysis of whatsoever. The chapters are not even edited properly, as you can see some funny statements in the book (page.125, "Error! Objects cannot be created from editing field codes", page.54, "Error! Reference source not found").
This book is very similar, in spirit, to the books of Ramjee Prasad and Van Nee, and Heiskala and Terry. The authors have provided references to their own work, without considering the good works put up by the fellow researchers in OFDM.
Over all, this is one of the pathetic, over-priced books from Kluwer. My recommendation is: don't read it, even if you get this for free.

Waste of money...

As the title of this book suggests the authors try to give the reader the essential background knowledge on implementation aspects of an OFDM system.
As usual, the book starts with a short introduction to the propagation model, OFDM transmission and the essential building blocks of such a communication system (e.g. coding).
In fact, most of these description do not go much into detail, rendering these chapters useless for experieced readers.
Even the synchonization and channel estimation, which are the essential components of a receiver are described very sketchy.
Moreover several chapters of this book are presenting the design of a WLAN receiver IC without going into details. There is only little more information than you could get from reading the authors' papers about their simulation system and their receiver ICs. If you expect a book that helps you to get around the problems in OFDM system design, you will be disappointed for sure.
All in all the book is a nice introduction to OFDM, but in no way a "how-to make it work" book. Regarding the content of the book and the low quality of the pictures, a price of 150$ (12/2003) is overpriced.

Extraordinary

Charles Jackson crafted an extraordinary debut novel, headlong and horrifying, in THE LOST WEEKEND. Its 248 pages of text recount five days in the drinking life of a thirtyish upper-middle-class New Yorker, Don Birnam, in 1936. Birnam adroitly shucks off his brother and girlfriend in favor of holing up alone and drinking, accompanied by his sizeable library of recorded classics. When he is forced to go outside to look for more money and more booze, he falls down a staircase and winds up in the hospital, which only partially dries him out before sending him home. The sequence of Don's looking for a pawnshop, not realizing it is Yom Kippur when most of the Second Avenue pawnshops are closed, is one of the most graphic in the book. Told almost entirely in interior monologue, it creates sympathy for a character who is hitting new lows in his life yet dealing with the tragedy not only with alarm and self-pity but also with humor and a strange kind of bravery.

THE LOST WEEKEND was published in 1944, more than fifteen years before the movie THE DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES was made and helped solidify the shift in medicine and psychology to a view of alcoholism as disease rather than moral weakness. In this, the book is well ahead of its time. Don seems to suffer from an ongoing inferiority complex paradoxically coupled with feelings of superiority. His father left the family when he was a little boy. He was groomed for success and given the European "grand tour" common to the elite of his generation, yet never fulfilled his promise. In college, Don develops a gay "crush" on an upperclassman in his fraternity, writes a passionate letter to him, is found out and is kicked out. (The 1945 movie starring Ray Milland tamped down any mention of homosexuality in favor of "writer's block," but in 1946 Jackson dealt with the topic at greater length in his novel THE FALL OF VALOR.)

The prose style in this first-person narrative is highly developed and that alone qualifies THE LOST WEEKEND as a modern classic. Birnam couples childhood reveries with a desperate search for the factors that led him into alcoholism; when he is lusting for a drink the interior monologue seems to pick up speed, much as a movie would go into an accelerated montage to heighten tension. But the book conveys nuance and insight to a much greater degree than even the popular movie can. Don's psychological introspection is mixed with the kind of horrors that an advanced alcoholic can expect to experience: hallucinations, delirium tremens, and the like. THE LOST WEEKEND is a highly recommended book, all the more so because actual alcoholic writers like Sinclair Lewis and Kingsley Amis have praised it for its realism. The Introduction by Blake Bailey is well worth reading before or after the main text and will not spoil the plot. In fact, Bailey in the Spring of 2013 gave us a wonderful biography of Jackson, Farther and Wilder: The Lost Weekends and Literary Dreams of Charles Jackson.

Powerful and Unforgettable

Just finished "The Lost Weekend" (1944), by Charles Jackson, set in 1936 in New York City.
A more harrowing and shocking journey one could hardly desire, and a more important piece of forgotten
mid-century American literature might never be unearthed. Much more than the story of five days in the
tortured life of an alcoholic at bottom, and much more than the multi-award winning movie of the same name,
(made almost immediately after this runaway best-seller), the book demonstrates erudition, sophistication, and stylistic
powers far above most contemporary writing, then or now. Once you start reading you simply cannot stop:
for the narrative itself becomes as addicting and overwhelming to the reader as the alcohol is to the protagonist.

The Lost Weekend by Charles Jackson is a total masterpiece. It's such a shame he is not better known. A story about 5 days in the life of alcoholic Don Birnam as he lies, cheats, and steals to get his booze. Some really, really great scenes in this book, like when he attempts to steal a purse from a nightclub, or desperately walking the streets of New York City looking for an open pawn shop to sell his typewriter. But I don't want to ruin the story for you. An absolute must read!

Ms. Venhaus facilitated and led the development of The Sustainable Sites Initiative: Guidelines and Performance Benchmarks 2009, the nation's first rating system for landscapes, and has held multiple leadership positions in the U.S. Green Building Council and the American Society of Landscape Architects. Heather is the founding principal of Regenerative Environmental Design and lives in Austin, Texas.

Great resource if you want to minimize the impact of building or developing a property

Heather Venhaus has done a remarkable job of explaining sustainability for small-scale sites in a manner which is practical and relevant. The book is clear, thorough and beautifully illustrated. It contains scores of references for further exploration. If you own, build, design, maintain, finance, regulate or legislate housing, this book is an eye-opener. If you want your next landscaping or gardening project to be earth-friendly, this book is a great tool. Even if you do not plan to pursue a Sustainable Sites certification, I still recommend this book. It is full of practical approaches and the science behind them. You will also find tips that will actually save you money over the "because that's the way we've always done it" construction methods.

This book, as well as the Sustainable Sites initiative in general, provides a key ingredient in the building process which has largely been missing from Western construction methods -- holistic assessment and planning. As a veteran of real estate development for 35 years, I know that very few houses or communities are planned with the full lifecycle impact of the site in mind. What a great resource! This book gives practical and applicable principles through detailed case studies with proven results. As a landscape architect designing and developing projects for the last 15 years, sustainability is always the forefront going into every project, but budgets typically "value engineer" out these "ideas" early on. Now I have the "proof is in the pudding" to back up our ideas as well as integrate new ones with our projects and our clients!

So disappointed.

I am so disappointed. I went out and bought the recommended brand ingredients. First recipe was so runny it never set up so I pitched it. Confident I had done something wrong I went on to recipe two. Same thing. The ratio of liquid to dry ingredients is way out of porportion. To make these recipes will be a try and fail to figure out the correct measurements. Not sure it's worth the trouble. I'll just look for new recipes.

I've been enjoying this book, and have made a few of the recipes. Some of them I liked and some of them I didn't, pretty much like all recipe books. If you're interested in making your own protein bars, I think you'll find this a useful read.

Few details, better as description of a spiritual experience

Few detailed tips and foggy description of "Flow" and how to get it into a life coaching session. Was recommended by the author. Much of the text seems to be describing the personal experience of the authors.

Perhaps is a good read for those who have experienced "flow" in sports or other endeavors to understand it could be translated into an experience in life coaching, too.

Enjoyed the Series

I received a copy of this book for an honest review. This is a continuation of the Ujal series with Rhal and Cara's story.

The Ujal are an alien race who live in the Earth's oceans and are seeking to co-exist with the humans. They can live in the water and out of it. Rhal is a warrior/guard and friend to Prince Tave, who is the next ruler in line over the Ujal race. However, the reader comes to find out he is also an Ujal assassin for the King (Tave's father), and has had a very unpleasant and abusive upbringing from both the king, his father, and his father's mate (Rhal's stepmother). I won't go into all the details and add spoilers, but the story surrounds Rhal and Cara, who are true mates, as they go through several difficulties to be together.

I gave Rhal: The Complete Series five stars for the following reasons:
1. It was entertaining and held my interest throughout the story.
2. I liked the main characters. At first, I was put off by Rhal, but as the story unfolded, I understood why he made some of his choices. Best of all, both he and Cara admitted when they made mistakes and didn't try to blame the other for their own mistakes.
3. The reading flowed and I found very few editing or grammatical errors that seem to be prevalent in more and more kindle books these days.
4. I appreciate the author allowing the reader to either buy one episode to see if he or she likes it, or the whole series. I bought other series from Erin Tate at the reasonable price of $2.99. I hate cliffhanger endings where I have to wait weeks, months, or even over a year to find out what happens. Clearly, I am not the most patient person so I appreciate being given the opportunity to read the whole series at one time.
5. To me, the $2.99 is very reasonable, especially compared to some of the other kindle prices out there. The whole series is a little short since I read it in about two - three hours, and I wish it was a little longer. However, I don't feel like I was cheated since I enjoyed the book, found the price reasonable (it costs more to go to the movies and eat popcorn for that length of time), and I like to read a variety of stories that takes me one day or several days to finish.

This book is stand alone; however, the other books in the series give background information and characters that are helpful and nice to read before reading this one. The story is a little darker than the other series because of what Rhal endured, and our main characters had to work a little harder and go through some anguish to have their happy ever after, but personally, I felt very satisfied with the story. It kept my attention to the very end, allowed me to escape my own problems for awhile, and I will read more books from Erin Tate.

Hubba, Hubba Rhal!

I was given the series to read for an honest opinion and my honest opinion is that I like this series more that the other two. I like books that have a darker side, more angst if you will that the characters have to get to in oder to deserve their happy ever after. I'm so glad I had them all at once to read because I inhaled all five in 2 hours! I really enjoyed Rhal and Cara story, how they started to how it ends. They end up both hurting each other in different ways, but come together in forgiveness and love in the end.

I don't want to give any spoilers away so I will just say that Rhal past has made him the way he is today and that he lets Cara in is amazing/heart warming. This is a great story to get lost in for a break from reality and I recommend it to people who like the good guys to win in the end.

I love it and recommended it, great fun!

I started reading the series today and couldn't drop it, I was hooked.
Super romantic, lots of drama, some e action. Awesome world and good well developed characters. Strategic timing for the hot scenes.
I'm glad I've read the previous Ujal books, it's great to find how the characters are doing, who had babies, etc.
I greatly enjoyed and recommended it to have a good time and totally forget about the real world.
