I do not know Dave Turner. I did not give birth to him or give birth to any of his children. I got his first book as a free download and read it on vacation last year. I preordered Paper Cuts (How To Be Dead Book 2)so that it would appear on my Kindle the moment that the file became available because I just loved How to Be Dead THAT much.

So what did I like so much about Paper Cuts (How To Be Dead Book 2)? Marry Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett and their offspring will be Dave Turner. Turner’s fiction is the world underneath ours that the average person simply can’t see. Death occupies an office in a fairly upscale part of town and shares space with monkeys writing on typewriters recently rewarded with a major studio deal. Turner’s clever humor is breathtaking.

That Death and his cohorts decide that they’re not going to play the game of a man they’ve never met was intriguing. When the world does seem to be ending, it could be the work of their frenemy, Beelzebub.

If you like social commentary presented in a clever package, fantasy or authors like Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams, pick this novel up immediately if not sooner. You will not regret the purchase.

Fun and entertaining

More like 4.5, but I'm a little picky.
I'd never heard of this author before this series, it was a really pleasant surprise to discover him.
The characters are fun, the plot a little predictable and slow but very well written so you don't really mind. Also the dialog and banter are engaging and entertaining, and there were enough interesting clever ideas/twists to keep things going.
I have read this and the previous book, and would be happy to see (and buy, and read) another installment in the series.
Reminiscient of A Lee Martinez (and a little of Terry Pratchett), if your a fan definitely give this a go.

Immensely entertaining

This book and its predecessor are the best books I have read in a long while. I was reminded of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett, but with a slightly more practical side. I had a very difficult time putting them down and read much later into the night than I should have. I look forward to the third book in this series, it really cannot come out soon enough!

About the Author
Dr. Eugene F. Brigham is Graduate Research Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida, where he has taught since 1971. Dr. Brigham received his M.B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley and his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina. Prior to joining the University of Florida, Dr. Brigham held teaching positions at the University of Connecticut, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of California-Los Angeles. Dr. Brigham has served as president of the Financial Management Association and has written many journal articles on the cost of capital, capital structure, and other aspects of financial management. He has authored or co-authored ten textbooks on managerial finance and managerial economics that are used at more than 1,000 universities in the United States and have been translated into 11 languages worldwide. He has testified as an expert witness in numerous electric, gas, and telephone rate cases at both federal and state levels. He has served as a consultant to many corporations and government agencies, including the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the U.S. Office of Telecommunications Policy, and the RAND Corporation. Dr. Brigham continues to teach, consult, and complete research in addition to his academic writing. He spends his spare time on the golf course, enjoying time with his family and dogs, and tackling outdoor adventure activities, such as biking through Alaska.

Dr. Phillip R. Daves is Associate Professor of Finance at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. His research interests encompass health care finance, asset pricing, derivative securities, and dividend policy. He has published papers in THE JOURNAL OF FINANCE, THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF FINANCE, APPLIED FINANCIAL ECONOMICS, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL PRACTICE AND EDUCATION, and THE JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL AND STRATEGIC DECISIONS. Dr. Daves' special interests in teaching include health care finance, investments, financial management, and asset pricing--which he teaches at the undergraduate, M.B.A., and Ph.D. levels. Consulting for a range of large and small companies as well as the state of Tennessee, he focuses on business valuation, compensation, value based management, and health care policy. He received his B.A. in economics from Davidson College, his M.S. in mathematics, and his Ph.D. in finance from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Thorough and Clear. Very Helpful in Developing Program.

I am a respiratory therapist and I am spearheading a pulmonary rehabilitation program at the hospital I work at. This book has been very helpful in helping to lay out goals and procedures for our program. It is thorough and clear. I would recommend this for anyone looking into starting a similar program.

I wish I had found this book years ago, as it is one of those books that succinctly sums up a body of literature. Acting with Technology has three great qualities that make it a must read for anyone who wishes to learn about the most advanced theories in the Learning Sciences, Organizational Psych, and Educational Technology. First, it has a great summary of Engestroms Activity Theory and developmental work research, including its origins in Vygotsky and Leonti'ev's work. This is especially great because some of these sources are not available in English (usually Russian/Swedish/French). Second, the book also includes a great summary of Actor Network Theory, a very thorny sociological perspective. I couldn't have summarized the literature better myself! Finally, the authors do an excellent job of synthesizing these frameworks with theories of human-computer interaction. It is exactly the kind of thinking that we need in the Learning Sciences!

Great for activity theory primer

I mainly purchased this book for the "activity theory in a nutshell" chapter. I have multiple articles and books on activity theory, including Vygotsky, Engestrom, Leontiev, Cole, etc. But I wanted a more approachable all-in-one summary. Kaptelinin and Nardi do a wonderful job explaining the history and concepts of activity theory. Their work is well organized and well explained. It is definitely a good starting spot for beginners to activity theory.

The book contains one of the best reviews of literature on Activity Theory -- the world as activity, reality as constantly changing processing. It's the dynamic alternative to the two predominant theories of reality -- as material things (objects out there), and as mental constructs (ideas [and delusions] within) -- the tired body/mind war that's been waging for the last 2,500 years. It's a world where neither the thought nor the thing are what count, and therefore humans can be free and no longer browbeat and enslaved. An important book, a liberating philosophy.

Very Dense

The author obviously has a lot of experience and also obviously put a tremendous amount of effort into writing this book. Nevertheless, it is very difficult to read. The type is small and there are very few line breaks, bullet lists, charts, or other visual aids to help the reader assimilate the information. Some paragraphs go on for two pages without any sort of break. The information in the book might be wonderful, but the book design [how the information is laid out to make it easier for the reader to absorb] is terrible - among the worst I have seen, and I have several hundred technical books on my shelves. I am really surprised that CRC Press (a major publisher that happens to have also published some of the best technical books that I have purchased) allowed this to go out in its current form.
