Great book -- don't buy it from Amazon

I've one chapter left to read and I am very pleased with this book. The author writes well (though he could use a little help from an editor) and presents a very comprehensive discussion of the Church Planting Movement that is present across the world and some practical action steps that every believer can do.

There is just enough coverage on the different case studies that the reader doesn't get bogged down in details but still gets a feel for what God is doing on the different continents. Then, he shifts to summarizing the characteristics of church planting movements, things that hinder them, and suggests that what we see as novel in the 21st century is actually akin to what the 1st century experienced.

WARNING: The book is inspiring. If you have any kind of heart for the lost, I can't see how you can read this book without feeling like you should be doing more to unleash God's power in your Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, or the uttermost parts of the world. Get ready to be challenged.

Some forgivable problems that wouldn't keep me from recommending the book:
* Some of his scripture references are lifted out of context but not in a heretical way, so I kind of forgive him.
* The book is pretty cheaply bound. My 9th grade English teacher taught us to flex the spine of paperbacks (for some reason I can't remember), but as soon as I did that, the glue cracked and two chunks of pages came out.

Lastly, I recommend that you not buy the book from Amazon. At the time of this review, the going price is close to $50. Visit the author's website ([...]) to order it for under $20.

Church Planting Movements: How God is Redeeming a Lost World. By David Garrison. Bangalore: WIGtake Resources, 2004. 362 pages. Paperback, $12.

"In 2001 a newly emerging Church Planting Movement yields 48,000 new believers and 1,700 new churches in one year" (p. 49). How can you start a church planting movement that sweeps through an entire people group? You can't! But God can. And God can use you to facilitate His purposes.

David Garrison's Church Planting Movements invites the reader to view God's blueprints for reaching all people groups- quickly! But before delving into missiological theory on how these movements work, Garrison takes the reader on a trip to eight major sectors of the world to view already existing church planting movements (CPMs). Each of these episodes narrates the events that catalyzed a full-fledged movement resulting in unreached peoples turning to Christ. He visits India, China, Africa, Latin America, Europe, North America, and the Muslim world. Next he distills the common elements from each movement into comprehensive lists of: 1.) What occurred in every CPM and 2.) What occurred in most CPMs. Some of these elements are: house churches, rapid reproduction, and lay leadership (p. 172). With the good, Garrison includes the bad. He lists the "seven deadly sins" of a CPM. These include: sequentialism (i.e. adding churches versus multiplying them), developing dependency on foreign funds, and not contextualizing the Gospel to the culture (p. 239). These elements choke a budding movement.

The last section of the book challenges the reader to assess his own standing in the scheme of God's church planting movements. Then, it equips him with tools to works towards getting on mission with God. Garrison's appendix includes: a step-by-step guide for planting and reproducing a house church model (p.307-315), an apologetic to reach Muslims (p. 319), and reference materials including Scriptures that under gird all aspects of the CPM philosophy (p.331).

Garrison does his presentation a service by beginning with stories of CPMs in action. People are drawn to the tales of what can actually happen, which are based in reality. These stories are inspiring, educational, and fun to read. This prepares the reader to be open to the new paradigms presented in the second half of the book, as well as builds anticipation to finally get to that point. "How can I start one?!"

The text is easy to read, put into contemporary terms and concepts that the greater Christian community can digest. Missiologist David Garrison has organized this content into lists, graphs, reference tools, and easy to reference case studies in order to communicate the perhaps intimidating world of church planting and frontier missions to the average North American Christian. His positive attitude remains one that encourages rather than rebukes its Christian audience or the Christian movement in general.

The content itself issues a challenge to traditional church planting strategy, not only through its exegesis of the Scriptural text, but through the distilled wisdom gained from case studies. Garrison makes a strong case for unpaid, local, lay leadership, planting rapidly reproducing house churches that exhibit characteristics of evangelism, prayer, and a persistent obedience to the Word of God. With the mention of only a few of these, certain church leaders may balk, saying "Is that feasible? Is that Scriptural? ... Is that comfortable?" Church Planting Movements fields these questions comprehensively, almost anticipating them at every turn.

The section entitled "A Call to Action" seems to anticipate that its readership will only be able to really absorb a certain degree of the material presented (p. 297). It directs the reader to assess at what stage he is in his personal response to CPM philosophy. With this in mind, he can take the next steps through further awareness, education, and/or experience- jump in! In light of this, Church Planting Movements may be a book worthy of re-read, if not definitely for reference. Its charts, steps, and other helpful tools make it a valuable resource to plumb either as new awareness prompts deeper study or as new stages of a CPM develop.

This book is ideal for church planters, world Christians, and pastors looking to amplify their vision to a God-size. It should not be despised by those already involved in church planting ministries, as Garrison showed many examples of principles neglected by current church planters through ignorance. In other instances, he advocates that the removal of bad principles is all it takes to set a dormant movement free (p. 239). David Garrison's book, Church Planting Movements, will be an invaluable addition to a Christian's spiritual and strategic preparation in seeing God's glory spread to the nations.

Review of "Church Planting Movements" for Pepperdine Missions Class

Because Garrison's book was published in 2004, the stories of church planting movements in all areas of the world, are exciting to read and more importantly, credible. He brings in numbers to support his claim that all over the world, people groups are coming to Christ in ways that parallel "the book of Acts", planting churches instead of focusing on the traditional missionary strategy of making one church grow larger in size and in population. Garrison focuses on the idea that the Gospel needs to be heard to people groups, taking the focus away from geography (there are Christians in India but there are many Indians.) The first two parts of this book focus on different movements- in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and India, South America, Europe, and North America. It is valuable that even in these last three areas (places that are considered "Christianized"), there are still groups and even nations that are spiritually poor and in need of missionary activity.

Garrison works hard to take a new approach to missionary strategy, even redefining missionaries as "strategy coordinators". He also works hard to write about Church Planting Movements in places where missionary activity is dangerous, often protecting the anonymity of the people involved in certain countries, even renaming some countries themselves. Garrison uses the last sections of his book to describe essential characteristics of these movements and even points out "sins" that many missionaries commit in their work. Important tools for bringing the gospel to these people groups include media and translations of the Bible and stories into their own language, a strong emphasis on prayer, and bringing training to the people instead of requiring the people to leaver their people for training. Believers model their faith so that others can learn and grow; Christians are encouraged to worship God in ways that are culturally relevant (with their own songs and strategies for worship).

Perhaps one of the most radical but at the same time fantastic points of Garrison's book is in his focus on immediate evangelism and on lay leadership. He writes about how missionaries should begin their work even before learning the language, prepared to pass on leadership and authority immediately to local leaders of authority regardless of their lack of seminary training. It is total dependence on the Holy Spirit and on God but at the same time, Garrison presents the idea of rapid growth and rapid dependence on lay leadership in a way that doesn't read as irresponsible or as a "plan-so-far" missionary strategy. The goal is to create churches that are reproducible, in their own heart language, empowering them to take on their own responsibility of evangelism to the people around them just as they have received their blessing of salvation.

If there is one reason to read this book, it is because it is proof that God is working in places that Westerners are not even aware of. Churches are being created, according to biblical principles that do not even want to depend on foreign aid, worshiping in ways that westerners might even consider barbaric.

worthless

when I received the book I quickly looked inside and realized I may have made a mistake: this book looks like it was printed in someone's basement with a 15 years old bubble jet printer ...

Then I started reading it.

I'm not a native English speaker but I've read tenth of programming books in English and this one seems to come out of an automatic translation application being fed with random quotes from a forum mentioning ADA. The style is horrible, with plenty of typos (it says ADA has function bonding ...), and general blabbing that's either irrelevant or unrelated to ADA. Some parts just don't make sense at all.

I stopped reading it at page 14 where it says that Hello_guys_10 is an illegal identifier name because it contains multiple underlines.
I know very little about ADA, and this is why I bought the book, to learn the language, but I know for sure identifiers can have multiple underlines.

I will not read it any further, because I don't trust what's written in it, and it completely defeats the purpose of a book targeted at beginners.

I'm wondering how this book can have so many positive reviews. I should have paid more attention to the negative ones. Maybe you should too.

OK but not great.

An ok overview. It has several technical errors. The biggest is that in identifiers can have more than one _ they can not have more that one at a time. That is this_is_a_test is fine but this__is not valid because there are 2 _ in it.

Completely worthless; don't waste your time

Short version: This book cannot possibly have earned 4.8 stars on its own merit; while the reviews did look a little bit like empty praise, I wasn't expecting the book to be this bad. Don't waste your money, or your time.

Long version: There are several major problems with this book.

1) The usage and style is dreadful. Here's a short passage from Chapter 3:

"After the starting letter, identifiers can contain as much numbers, underlines, and letters. Just make sure that underlines only occur once in the identifier. Also, underlines must ever be the last character in the identifier....Letter cases are not very important....However, it is imperative for an identifier to fill one text line."

There are a few places where I can't even tell what the author means, and besides, I find it very difficult to trust a book that is written so poorly and unprofessionally.

2) Though this is supposed to be a "beginner's guide," in several places technical jargon and Ada terminology is used without introduction. While I understand that this is probably not intended to be a book for learning your first programming language, I am a computer science student and have fairly extensive background in programming, and I have trouble understanding some of these paragraphs (not helped by point 1).

Things such as imports or the function Put_Line() (for displaying output on the terminal) are used in code examples without explanation. The text surrounding the code examples tells me less than the code itself, even without much familiarity with Ada's syntax.

In other places, pages are taken up on boilerplate: an entire chapter is devoted to explaining the use of the boolean comparison operators (equal to, not equal to, less than, greater than, less than or equal to, greater than or equal to).

3) The book fails to explain the motivation behind many things; for instance, underscores can be written in numbers and will be ignored by the compiler. The purpose of this is to allow you to write thousands separators in the source code, but it doesn't explain this and leaves you to wonder why you might want to put extra characters in your code without any reason, and why the compiler would specifically be written to allow it.

4) There are no exercises whatsoever, nor does it even explain how one compiles an Ada program, which might be fine for a reference work but hardly for a book that is supposed to introduce you to the language.

Better than the "The Complete History of Kastelir"

"The Sky Beneath the Sun" is the 2nd book in a trilogy, the first being "The Complete History of Kastelir". If you have not read the 1st book, I recommend you read it first. I gave "The Complete History of Kastelir" 5 stars, and "The Sky Beneath the Sun" would be 6 stars in comparison.

This is an incredible book, I loved it. I found the story completely engaging, the characters exquisitely developed. But the best of all? The author has a gift for writing, pure and simple. There are passages in the book that are so beautifully done that I cannot begin to describe how wonderful they are. I cried, I laughed (a little) and sometimes I was so surprised I had to reread the passage a 2nd or even a 3rd time. A stunning achievement by the author.

Yes, if you wish to read a well-written book, look no further.

This book is LOADS better than the first

This book is LOADS better than the first, and I already quite liked the first. There are still grammatical errors, but they're fewer and less confusing.

Also, the main character has actual goals and takes actual steps to resolve them. That's great. She's actually a driver of her own plot for the most part rather than taking the backseat to other, more interesting characters. Having the first book as set-up is important to reading this one, and it's definitely worth wading through for the payoff. Can't wait for the third one.

I'm not sure that The Sky Beneath the Sun is better than the first novel

Unlike most of the other reviewers, I'm not sure that The Sky Beneath the Sun is better than the first novel. I can, however, say that they're both great novels that fit in very well with each other. But, let me get some cons out of the way first.

There is a bit of a "small world" issue going on here. There's also some telegraphing going on. Small world means that, if there is an important character existing in the world, that the protagonists will or have met them. Telegraphing, or Chekhov's Gun, is when a seemingly small part of the story plays into the plot later. If I was to reread TSBtS, which I'm sure I will someday, or even if I was to reread the original Dragonoak, I would be able to place most of the conversations to points later in the story where the things they're talking about will happen. Now, I'm not saying this is entirely bad. Nothing feels like it was specifically brought out just to be a twist or drive the plot. What I am saying is that there are points in the story where you might put two and two together, and just wait for the four to show up later-on.

Characters continue to be the strong point here. There are a lot of people passing through the story, and for the most part all of them have particular personalities that are built up over time. That said, it's more their actions that I prefer. The characters are thoughtful, they see boundaries, they deal with issues in ways that usually defy tropes. Especially important is the way that they deal with their pasts. Important things continue to impact their characters long after they've happened, because that's how people are. They cling to things that have made an impact, and getting over those things is most of the fun about reading characters like this.

To sum everything up. I loved the story, and I would read it again. I can't say it's better or worse than the original, it's just different, and that's not bad.

The problem with both volumes is that the writer 'beats about the bush' before approaching a given subject matter. Furthermore there are too much unnecessary and irrelevant details in certain chapters,which are likely to overload and mislead the first time reader(beginner).Instead, these irrelevancies could have been replaced with more necessary information, and thus making the approach a more straightforward style.besides, better these books than those previous Cambridge editions.However, one thing i really appreciate is the friendly user approach(no difficult words or terms) and the full coverage in the topics.

Merriam Press Military Monograph 13. Sixth Edition (February 2012). The 316th Troop Carrier Group was formed at Patterson Field, Ohio, in February 1942. By November, the Group air echelon consisting of Headquarters, 36th, 37th, 44th, and 45th Squadrons, flew to its first overseas post in Egypt. There, staff sergeant pilots flew their C-47s in support of the British 8th Army across North Africa from Egypt to Tunisia, delivering supplies and pioneering in air evacuation. The Group, less the 37th Squadron which remained in Egypt, dropped the 82nd Airborne Division in the invasion of Sicily as part of the operations HUSKY 1 and 2, on 9-11 July, 1943. In HUSKY 2, the 316th lost 12 out of the 23 troop carrier command aircraft that were shot down by friendly fire. In February 1944, the Group moved to Cottesmore, England, from where it participated in the invasions of France (Normandy, D-Day), Holland (MARKET GARDEN), and Germany (VARSITY). After 30 months of overseas duty, the 316th, one of the first troop carrier groups to be sent overseas, was one of the first to return to the United States in May 1945. Stationed at Pope Field, North Carolina, it trained with the 82nd for the pending invasion of Japan. That mission was aborted when Japan surrendered in August 1945. Group personnel wore nine battle stars, three Distinguished Unit Citations, Silver Stars, numerous Distinguished Flying Crosses, Air Medals, Purple Hearts, and Soldiers' Medals. Ingrisano, a radio operator, flew with the 37th Squadron from August 1943 to the end of the war. His history is based primarily upon official records. It is heavily footnoted, contains personal recollections from members of the Group, and a roster of some 2700 names. Students of the air war in World War II, especially of vertical deployment of troops, and genealogists will find this history to be an excellent source for future research. Well written and a "go to" reference book. Buy it! Photo: My Grandfather in Egypt, Feb. 16, 1943

This is the 6th book I've read about WWII glider/troop carrier operations. It is as good and well documented as Green Light by Wolfe and 32nd Troop Carrier Squadron by VanReken. If you are interested in researching a Troop Carrier Group or Squadron's history, this is the book that will show you through its extensive reference listings and footnotes where to find the information (both records and location of records). In fact, some of the footnotes provide detail as interesting as the text! Mr. Ingrisano really did the 316th TCG a great service in writing this book and telling their story. I am sad to have recently learned that he is no longer with us. I am researching my Grandfather's history as a Glider Pilot of the 314th TCG/32nd TCS (one of a few he served with) and this book is helpful because the 316th and 314th were sister Groups and often located closely to one another, with mirroring movements.

Additionally, the Appendices have a wealth of detailed information, like tabulated combat missions, service members killed in action, their Army Serial Number (ASN), squadron affiliation and place of internment that would be expensive in travel and time to chase down yourself. For those of you researching a particular aircraft tail number, Mr. Ingrisano was thoughtful enough to link crews and aircraft in Appendix IV and V. A list of Glider Pilots is in Appendix VI, and tabulated lists and information of combat crews for each of their combat missions. On p. 363 is a listing of aircraft nose codes of the IX Troop Carrier Command by Wings and Groups. Wing Mission Reports are listed in Appendix XI and 316th TCG Roster is in Appendix XII. And, for the newbie, a handy glossary of military acronyms are found in Appendix XIII. If you want to get a good idea of life and service with the Troop Carrier Wings during WWII, you're looking for a better understanding of Wing organization and/or you are looking for a particular detail about a person or airplane, buy this book! It is fantastic and we owe Mr. Ingrisano a great deal of thanks for putting so much effort into this book.

A window into a father's experience

My father is a footnote in this book . He was a radio operator in a troop transport plane in WWII. Like many vets, he never spoke much about his experience. I knew that he saw battle. I knew he was in France, and Sicily and Egypt and England. But this thorough and well documented history of the missions and experiences of his unit told me more than could have hoped for concerning his military experience. The book is well written, extrordinarily researched and documented, and provides a vivid picture of what it meant to be a warrior in the big war. Thank you Michael Ingrisano for bringing this history to me and to the world!
