Good overview for the mathematically inclined and non-mathematically-inclined

I really liked this book, even as a mathematics major. It was a great introduction to areas of math I thought I had no interest in as well as a good overview of effective mathematical thinking. After reading this book and taking a course that went along with it I developed a new-found interest in graph theory, which was an area I thought I hated.

If you think you hate mathematics, this is a good book for you. The explanations of seemingly-intimidating concepts are clear and there are lots of explanations of how you see these phenomena in the "real world."

Overall, I highly recommend this.

As promised, this book makes math fun. I've been out of college for over 40 years, and I am having a ball with this book. I always liked math, it just did not like me. Learning the math of the Universal Product Code (UPC) and Bank Account Routing numbers was worth the price of the book.

This book rambles on and on again. The first few chapters are the worst as you go into the other chapters in the book it does get a little better. This book is a prime example, of "people will publish anything for money". Our Professor has requested a new book hopefully a new book author is approved. We had to use this book and it sucked, so I hope the next students won't have too.

About the Author
Matthias R. Mehl, PhD, is Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Arizona. He received his doctorate in social and personality psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. Over the last decade, he developed the electronically activated recorder (EAR) as a novel methodology for the unobtrusive naturalistic observation of daily life. He has given workshops and published numerous articles on novel methods for studying daily life. Dr. Mehl is a founding member and the current Vice President of the Society for Ambulatory Assessment.

Tamlin S. Conner, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Otago in New Zealand. She received her doctorate in social psychology from Boston College and completed postdoctoral training in health and personality psychology at the University of Connecticut Health Center. She has published numerous articles on the theory and practice of experience sampling; is a leading expert on ambulatory self-report techniques; and conducts research on well-being, emotions, and the science of self-report. Dr. Conner is a founding member and current executive committee member of the Society for Ambulatory Assessment.

Tony Hillerman (1925-2008) was an award-winning author and newspaperman, best known for his mystery novels set on the Navajo Nation.

Don Strel, a photographer, has been published in numerous books and magazines. He has taught art and design at the university level and has served as the director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of New Mexico. He is currently the director of the Southwest Assignments photography, design and public relations agency, which he founded in 1991.

Anne Hillerman is the founding director of Wordharvest Writers' Workshops, a journalist, and author whose books include Tony Hillerman's Landscape: On the Road with Chee and Leaphorn. She is Tony Hillerman's eldest daughter.

A must-have book

A long time ago in a state far away I purchased a small book that told larger-than-life stories. I read "The Great Taos Bank Robbery," then read it again. Author Tony Hillerman became one of my heroes at that point, and he remains so to this day. In the intervening years I have returned to that dog-eared book more times than I can count, especially when writing my own newspaper, wire service or TV stories and wishing I were writing them where Tony Hillerman did: the Land of Enchantment - New Mexico.
I collected First Edition copies of Tony Hillerman's books, but sadly, I never got to meet the man. I have met his vivacious daughter, Anne, however, and was delighted to learn that she and photographer-husband Don Strel were re-issuing "The Great Taos Bank Robbery" with added notes and pictures. The book came to my house yesterday, and I did not put it down until early this morning - once again held under the spell of Tony Hillerman's storytelling. Just in time, too, as my original copy was dropping its pages faster than I could tape them together.
I cannot urge you strongly enough - buy this book if you love good writing, the West, and a bunch of characters who make up "The Land of Enchantment."

The Great Taos Bank Robbery

This was Tony Hillerman at his best. It is a series of short stories about New Mexico and its people. Most are kind of "quirky" showing the amusing side of of western humor. The title story is about a Bank Robbery that actually didn't happen and how it became the folklore of a town. It is an amusing collection that will take no more than a couple of hours to read, but you will find yourself reading it over and over to find more of the hidden nuances of the town's residents.

A balm for a proverbial wound

I found Pastor Crippen's first book shortly after I separated from my now ex-husband almost 3 years ago. I had been married for 16 years to an verbally abusive sex addict. The first book gave me such closure from 16 years worth of unanswered questions, it was literally like a balm for a gaping wound. I often refer to his first book when I have questions in my life about my ex. But...this book -- Wow. I bought it a few days before what would have been my 18th wedding anniversary and waited to read it on that very day. I read it in one sitting, along with a highlighter that I literally used up highlighting verses and wisdom. This book saved me from another day, another hour, another moment of despair. The wisdom that I gleaned in this book is so powerful, so liberating, it has allowed me to stop feeling guilty for the divorce and start the healthy process of healing and moving on. After being ostracized from the church I had attended for many years due to the lies my ex spread about me before, during, and after the divorce process, I now understand my ex-husband's evil and unholy charade. Thank you, Pastor Crippen, from the bottom of my heart. Your work and ministry are God's gift to the world.

world-changing truth

If I could give this book 100 stars, I would. It's about time the issue of abuse was addressed by the 'church'. We are the ones who are supposed to be addressing these issues, not hiding from them. Thank God for people like these authors who have the guts to speak up for victims of abuse, exposing the tactics and mindset of the abuser, and backing it up with scripture the right way instead of twisting it as some very well known pastors have done. If you have been a victim of abuse, or know a victim of abuse, I HIGHLY recommend this book as a valuable resource.

What Every Pastor Needs to Know

This is the book that should be required reading in every seminary. For too many years the church has covered up abuse of the worse kind while enabling the abusers to continue their evil work. Jesus hates that. In fact, Jesus said it was better that a millstone be tied around the person and them thrown into the sea than to hurt one of God's little children, but today far too many church leaders have forgotten that.

This books is such a timely message that needs to be read and reread and fully absorbed. Jeff Crippen does a powerful job of ripping off the cover of the ways that manipulators work to expose the hidden works of darkness. This is a very easy to absorb, fascinating and well-written manual on how to recognize the good from the bad. Jesus told us that we would know them by their fruit---Jeff really helps us understand how to recognize the fruit in practical ways.

God forgive us for allowing this to go on for far too long because the ministry was more important than the people-----if Jesus would have died for even just one person then how can the church keep allowing abusers into positions of leadership where they can access way too many people? Since abusers are highly skilled at pulling the wool over everyone----this is the book that helps you see clearly what's really happening. Thank you Jeff for writing what everyone else is afraid to say.

I suspect this is a good book. The three stars are because I am giving it the benefit of the doubt. The writing is clear and includes enough detail to explain the topics.

Here's my concern. It is listed as a 716 page book, and it has no table of contents and no index. That's not ideal for nonfiction, but it isn't too bad if you're planning to read from start to finish anyway. Even if I were going to read it cover to cover, which is rare for these types of books, I'd want to go directly to the topics I'm really interested in first. Only after doing that do I sometimes decide I want to read everything an author has to say about something technical.

It begins as most JavaScript books begin, with a review of the basics. The description made me believe it would cover certain specifics in a way I was looking for. Unfortunately finding out if that's true has been tedious. This book needs to be updated with a table of contents as soon as possible.

When that happens, I suspect I will happily be coming back to update this review for the better.
