About the Author
Mark Q. Sutton began his career in anthropology in 1968.� While still in high school, he took advantage of the opportunity to participate in archaeological excavations conducted by the local Community College. He went on to earn a BA (1972), an MA (1977), and a Ph.D (1987) in anthropology.� He has worked as an archaeologist for the US Air Force, the US Bureau of Land Management, various private consulting firms, and taught at a number of community colleges and universities.� He taught at California State University, Bakersfield from 1987 to 2007 where he retired as Emeritus Professor of Anthropology.� He now works for Statistical Research, Inc. in San Diego.� Dr. Sutton works on understanding hunter-gatherer adaptations to arid environments but has also investigated entomophagy, prehistoric diet and technology, and optimal foraging theory.� Dr. Sutton has worked at more than 120 sites in North America and has published over 160 books, monographs, and papers on archaeology and anthropology.

Preface One of the major goals of this fourth edition was to reorganize and expand the chapter on Contemporary Issues, add some new photos, to correct errors, and to update all of the other materials in the book, particularly the sections on prehistory. A very dry listing of the various aspects of indians in different areas of North America. It could almost be a large chart comparing the similarities of the indian practices, etc. So far (four chapters) it turns out that the indian's anthropology practices are more alike than different.

In 1948 the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and with it a profusion of norms, processes, and institutions to define, promote, and protect human rights. Mutua contends that in fact the human rights corpus, though well meaning, is a Eurocentric construct for the reconstitution of non-Western societies and peoples with a set of culturally biased norms and practices.

Mutua maintains that if the human rights movement is to succeed, it must move away from Eurocentrism as a civilizing crusade and attack on non-European peoples. Only a genuine multicultural approach to human rights can make it truly universal. Indigenous, non-European traditions of Asia, Africa, the Pacific, and the Americas must be deployed to deconstruct—and to reconstruct—a universal bundle of rights that all human societies can claim as theirs.

Third World Critique of Human Rights Movement

Mutua's book is a must-have for those seeking to understand why a hegemonic, westernized approach to human rights is so problematic. Speaking from the perspective of an "insider/outsider" (the author is a leading international human rights scholar and activist from Kenya), he examines both the positive aspirations and contributions of human rights as well as evidence of its limitations and even dangers in practice.

Rather than embrace a strong version of cultural relativism, Mutua clearly condemns violations of human rights in both North and South. Nevertheless, he demands that human rights leaders must spend time in self-examination with regard to the history, origins, and contemporary contexts in which violations occur if abuses are to be effectively combatted.

There is much here for debate and discussion both inside classrooms and among activists in the field. Along with works by Anghie, Gathii, Rajagopal, Woods & Lewis, Andrews, Knop, Wing, and others, Mutua's book is a foundational contribution to the loose network known as the "Third World Approaches to International Law" (TWAIL) movement.

This book is very interesting, especially for comparison to western ideology as the author is of African origin. The book offered me a very interesting perspective on the subject of human rights from a totally different mindset than my own. Overall, a very solid book and I definitely recommend it.

Kindergarten-Grade 4-Adam starts school, and although he loves stories, he can't seem to get the words to make sense. Over the next few years, he slowly despairs of ever learning to read. Instead, he imagines that he is being held captive by an evil king who torments him with vowels. His parents hire tutors to help, but it isn't until a specialist comes in at the beginning of third grade and diagnoses him as dyslexic that things start to look up. For Adam, it has become a much bigger problem than just learning how to read-he must also find the self-confidence that years of failure have robbed from him. His new teacher helps him see that reading will always be hard for him, but that it is possible. The pastel illustrations adequately convey Adam's emotions. Wouldn't suggest this book - very negative spin on dyslexia

This was a very negative spin on dyslexia, I was reading it to my son who was just diagnosed and I noticed him cringing while I read. He doesn't have negative feelings about not being able to read and he is excited to start therapy, the child in the book had a negative attitude and I felt like whiting out the story and writing my own. Hope this helps you!

A Kid Like Me

I bought this for my 8 year old son who is an incredibly bright yet struggling student. He keeps asking to meet a boy like him. This is the closest I can come so far. This book brought tears to his eye, because he was so excited that Adam was just like him. His eyes sparkled with excitement as he exclaimed, "That's just like me!" The illustrations and metaphors are beautiful and inspiring. We are buying a copy to give to our son's classroom for the Holidays.

It remains a stunning debut, a psychologically loaded tale in which Bruce Wayne confronts his innermost fears in the form of a grotesque embodiment of his costumed alter ego. Even this early in his career, Cooke's striking style, made up of dynamically simple drawings, cinematic compositions, and noirish lighting effects, is fully formed. Besides Ego and a handful of shorter stories featuring the Caped Crusader, this collection includes the Catwoman graphic novel Selina's Big Score (2003), in which that villainess attempts a final heist before her reinvention as a vigilante defending the downtrodden. Its presence here might be questioned, for nowhere is Batman�to be found in it, yet it's so impressive—the high-water mark of Cooke's pre–New Frontier career—that it's petty to quibble. This is Why People Read Batman!

This hardcover collect two excellent graphic novels by Darwyn Cooke, Batman: Ego and Catwoman: Selina's Big Score, as well as some short stories also by Mr. Cooke.
Batman:Ego was published in 2000 as a 64 page graphic novel, but finally gets the hardcover treatment it deserves, while the Catwoman tale, which was an original hardcover, crops up again in the same format. Both tales feature fast paced writing coupled with a fantastic art style which harkens back to Batman the Animated series (for which Darwin was one of the designers) but with more of a noirish edge, so don't let the streamlined style fool you into thinking these stories are for all ages or too soft. If you liked Mr. Cooke's recent work on the Spirit, this is better. Much better.
Some other reviewers on this page commented that this book was a little dissapointing due to the inclusion of a story which does not feature Batman, but don't be dissuaded from picking this one up. Selina's Big Score features one of Batman's oldest villians in one of her greatest appearances, so don't miss out. Give it a chance, then read the collections of Catwoman comics by Ed Brubaker, Cooke and Cameron Stewart, which are some of the best crime comics around.
Fans of Richard Stark's Parker will recognize a Parker like Character, named Stark, a heister who helps Catwoman pull of the titular big score which is just as hard nosed (and fun) as any written by Richard Stark during the 60s and 70s. This will serve as a primer to Darwyn's upcoming adaptations of the first four Parker novels, beginning next year.
This hardcover is also special because it does not feature the ugly spine design which appears on many of the current DC hardcovers where a DC logo appears at the bottom of the spine in a blue back ground, ruining a book's appearance on the book shelf.
Don't miss out on one of the best written and drawn set of Batman stories of the last 20 years; right up there with the Batman classics of the 80s like Year One, DKR and the Killing Joke, at least in my opinion.
