The idea of race, writes the author, is a cultural rather than biological reality. Tribes always believed that strangers were subhuman, but they could overcome their inferiority by joining the tribe―e.g., converting to Christianity or adopting Roman citizenship… Today, since racism is politically incorrect, Sussman maintains, supporters have migrated en masse to the anti-immigration movement… Sussman delivers a lucidly written, eye-opening account of a nasty sociological battle that the good guys have been winning for a century without eliminating a very persistent enemy. Sussman, an anthropology professor at Washington University in St. Louis, explores and explodes the concept of race. He contends that, in the face of a longstanding scientific consensus that race possesses no biological basis, many people still mistakenly believe that traits like aggression, intelligence, and generosity can be traced to it. Noting that racial distinctions between humans have no biological basis is not new, Sussman makes his contribution by exposing the ways that academic ‘science’ is invoked to authorize an outmoded concept. He traces the history of ideas about race, moving briskly from the Spanish Inquisition to Linnaeus and Kant, and offering a detailed discussion of eugenics. Lest readers imagine this is all in the distant past, Sussman devotes his last three chapters to the funding mechanisms that keep racist research alive today. He shows that ‘science’ has been used in efforts to overturn civil rights legislation, and he examines the ways racist discourse has become intertwined with immigration policy. This book, which is both provocative and commonsensical, will be useful to scholars, but may also spark a broader conversation. (Publishers Weekly 2014-08-25)

Exceptionally good

Well researched. He explains the origins of misunderstood terms like 'eugenics and 'polygenic' theories. Reads easily and yet full of good scientific research. Highly recommended especially for those who've been inculcated by the popular media to believe in the evolutionary origins of race.

Excellent But More Easily Applied By Writers Than Players

Many jazz theory texts tend to fall into categories of those more suitable for players in search of improvisational techniques and others more appropriate for composers and arrangers, perhaps including a deeper theoretical and structural discussion. I realize that's a fine line I've drawn with plenty of overlap, but in my own study I've found it to be true.

Author Terefenko's `Jazz Theory - from basic to advanced study' attempts to thread the needle but in the end comes down on the side of composers, arrangers and certainly keyboard players - or at least those musicians with some proficiency at the keyboard.
At first glance the sight of the author's phrase model diagrams resembling Schenkerian notation tells you this isn't so much a hands-on, horn-at-the-ready book of exercises. It's more an in-depth theoretical exploration of jazz harmony, melodic techniques and form that's every bit as rigorous as the integrated theory texts (i.e. harmony, counterpoint, form) used in classical study.
There's a heavy emphasis on reading in both clefs and many of the examples are keyboard-scored. Those less comfortable will be at a disadvantage.

While the book attempts to covers a wide swatch of jazz history, up to and including free form, the primary focus and many examples are drawn from bebop ("Moose the Mooche", "Confirmation") and the standards repertoire.

If you're familiar with the chord-scale theory approach of Berklee-influenced texts, there's a lot of commonality here although Terefenko's emphasis on phrase models and his discussion of form offers plenty of material from a perspective all its own.
The DVD serves as a play-along - there's an appendix of `Aebersold-like' charts - providing useful realistic-sounding backing tracks to try your hand at applying some of the modal and bop tune-based patterns.

While the play-along is a nice addition, in the end I don't feel `Jazz Theory' is a real `player's book' but more of a deep-dive theory textbook. Players can clearly benefit, but it requires patience to creatively extrapolate and translate the material to non-keyboard instruments.

Composers and arrangers on the other hand should consider this absolutely essential grounding and the book does a fine job of presenting it.

Great book. Has everything ones needs to know about jazz theory. This is one of the best books I have found on jazz theory and harmony. It is easy to understand and has great examples. Anyone interested in knowing everything about jazz theory should have a copy of this book.

More than a pedagogical text

Jazz Theory provides a successful approximation of the "pedagogical theory" and "analytical theory", as Henry Martin has classified the jazz theory. A consistent theoretical basis is provided by adopting typical approaches of academic writings - like Schenkerian analysis and set theory - without forget in any moment the point of view of the musician and the primary goal of improving the improvisational skills. The text is also enriched with original Terefenko's thoughts about phrases and form. Undoubtedly, an imperative text-book for any musician.

fun paranormal police procedural

In Paul Bunyan State Forest, Minnesota a hunter finds the butchered corpse of a teenage girl. FBI Agents Bernadette Saint Clare and Tony Garcia lead the investigation into the horrific homicide made worse by the culprit slicing open the victim's body to remove her nine month old fetus.

The fatality is Lydia Dunton, the found daughter of U.S. senator Magnus Dunton, who has made it publicly clear his scorn for the bureau even before his daughter's death and is even more outraged with the feds. On Lydia's head is an inverted red pentagram, but that somehow vanishes at the morgue. Conducting research into similar recent cases, Saint Clare discovers an identical murder in Wisconsin and proof that Lydia had been at that location recently.

The third Saint Clare Minnesota FBI paranormal police procedural (see BLIND RAGE and BLIND SPOT) is an exciting whodunit enhanced by the abuse of power of the grieving father. The investigation is fun to follow though it predominately goes by the sub-genre's standard operating procedures. What is interesting is Saint Clare's ability to "see" through the eyes of a killer; yet as with BLIND RAGE, this skill is for the most part irrelevant to solving the case. Still Fans will enjoy this entertaining Minnesota murder mystery.

Decent fast-paced thriller

The hero of Person's plots, Agent Bernadette Saint Clare, has a unique power to see through the eyes of a serial killer as he goes about his nefarious business. Bernadette's ability though, unlike earlier novels in the series, is not very relevant or crucial to the storyline.

The plot is definitely an exciting whodunit with a touch of supernatural genre. enhanced by the abuse of power of the grieving father. In spite of some inconsistencies in the story, the fans of fast-paced thrillers will enjoy this book.
