An excellent introduction to the design theory world

This book is filling a gap in the literature to learn the basic techniques in combinatorial designs. It is accessible for any student with a minimum background in mathematics, this makes the book appropriate as a textbook on the subject. The exercises are very well designed too.
The bibliography has been carefully selected and any of the papes referenced is classic in this subject.
For all these reasons I consider that this book is the right door to start learning about the wonderful world of combinatorial designs.

Very Limited Book

This book has very few examples and the exercies are do not
follow the logic of the lessons. Very hard to read and understand, simple concepts are made very difficult through this book. Assumes a lot from the reader. (i.e. "Obviously, the answer is 2"). Obviously? It took me two hours to come up with that answer! Show me HOW!
Seems like this book was written for those who know combinatorics already, not good for beginners.

A Chapter A Day...

As we go about our daily routine, it is quite easy to forget our sense of purpose. As the Talmud says: "Anyone that spends time thinking about his direction in life will see 'yeshuat hashem'" (Tract. MK 5b). The book, written in small and easily digestible chapters, will enlighten people on all spiritual levels, and foster a greater sense of purpose to their lives.

My one negative comment is, being that the writer is a Sephardic Jew, it would be nice to see the book written in the Sephardic pronunciation.

I plan on purchasing several copies for my family members and hope they enjoy this book as well.

Pero siempre habr� fuerzas que busquen el absoluto, el poder total sobre enemigos como el individuo, su voluntad y la duda, en aras de una supuesta igualdad o justicia. Decenas de millones de v�ctimas inocentes muy recientes no disuaden a los sacerdotes del fanatismo.

Estas reflexiones incluyen algunas muy personales referidas a mi padre y a m�, en la convicci�n de que es necesaria la defensa de la verdad y la mirada limpia al pasado para impedir la repetici�n de perversiones pol�ticas e ideolog�as totalitarias. He escrito un r�o de observaciones sobre el pasado y presente de una sociedad hoy ya sin certezas ni anclajes, y sobre la tentaci�n de buscarlos en un “asalto al cielo”. Es una historia de ilusiones y frustraciones en Espa�a; de la tragedia pol�tica y humana de una naci�n atrapada entre mentiras.

Hay que estar muy alerta en este fin de era. Se ha hundido una realidad y no ha emergido a�n otra. Habr�, pues, que dar los primeros pasos de la exploraci�n por espacios ignotos en el peor momento, en la hora de la rabia, en estos d�as de ira�.

Para entender mejor la Espa�a actual

Es un libro amargo pero probablemente muchos coincidan en la cr�tica. Tanto la historia personal como la profesional del autor le invitan a considerar que la democracia no es algo que est� garantizado de una vez y para siempre y, concretamente en el caso espa�ol, entiende que se encuentra amenazada por una situaci�n en la que encuentra bastantes paralelismos con el advenimiento de los nazis a Alemania aunque sea bajo la forma de populismos al estilo venezolano. Naturalmente, para llegar ah� y caer en los brazos de un "salvador", como tambi�n ocurri� en la �poca nazi, es necesario como primera condici�n que se produzca un total desapego a la pol�tica por parte de los ciudadanos, desapego al que contribuyen tanto la falta de soluciones como una corrupci�n muy generalizada. La tesis b�sica mostrada por Tertsch es que es necesario a cambiar pero que no todo cambio posible es hacia una mejora. Es posible empeorar y mucho.

Su reflexi�n sobre la falsificaci�n de la historia y su inevitable consecuencia -repetirla- recuerda mucho a otro gran libro, "El conocimiento in�til" de Jean Fran�ois Revel- y, de nuevo, el autor ha sufrido en sus propias carnes -f�sicamente incluso debido a una agresi�n que le provoc� secuelas y un apartamiento temporal de la profesi�n- lo que denuncia. Tertsch fue periodista en el diario "El Pais" durante muchos a�os y el tono vehemente que puede encontrarse en "D�as de ira" puede ya encontrarse en libros suyos de 1994 como "La venganza de la historia". Sin embargo, la vehemencia en la cr�tica implica, en el contexto de la Espa�a actual denunciado por el autor, asumir casi por obligaci�n la etiqueta de "extrema derecha" aunque sus posici�n se halle muy alejada de ah�.

En suma, un libro que vale la pena para todo aqu�l que quiera entender un poco m�s de la Espa�a actual, muy descriptivo en los hechos aunque se pueda o no estar de acuerdo en las conclusiones sobre el grado de la amenaza que representan las nuevas marcas del nazismo.

This new resource guide is the compiled works of the late Anita Rui Olds. Anita held a doctorate in Human Development and Social Psychology from Harvard University and was the founder and director of The Child Care Institute, an annual training program for designers and child-care profesionals. Her firm, Anita Olds & Associates, amassed over 30 years of experience in the design of children's environments. In addition, Anita was on the advisory council of the ECO Institute.

The book contains the principles of interior and exterior layout and design for child care centers, beginning with an explanation of the important facets of a child environment. Fully developed ideas and solutions for effective design processes, intelligent overall center design, and efficient layout of dedicated, as well as over 550 floor plans, drawings, photographs, charts, and illustrations. About the Author
Anita Rui Olds (Woodacre, CA) holds a doctorate from Harvard University and has taught since 1969 at Tufts University and the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Essential Resource

This is a terrific and necessary resource for anyone involved with the design or renovation of a child care setting. The author has clearly and concisely poured into the book her considerable knowledge and understanding of child care facilities, her passionate beliefs, and her attention to the details of good design. Her knowledge of child development is evident in all of her ideas.

Outstanding Resource!!

Worth every dime!!! Anita Rui Olds has incredible insight into creating environments that are reflective of children and their interests. She believes that a child care setting should have "spirit." Included are Reggio-type environmental solutions that create a sense of wonder with an architecturally aesthetic sensibility. Lots of great ideas packed into this book. Only regret is that the pictures are too small and not in color. Would have been worth extra [$$] to have an expanded edition.

The best

This must be the best book that exist about designing Child Care Center. It covers everything, but the most important is the focus the autor made on the children. This book is a must for every architect or people interested in design of this kind of buildings, specially if he/she is really interested in children well being.
The only but is that for the quality of its content, this book deserves a better paper and color pictures. (a 0 star here for MacGrow-Hill).
Probably this book is call to change the way a day care is seen today.

About the Author

Peter Felten is assistant provost, director of the Center for Engaged Learning, and associate professor of history at Elon University. H-Dirksen L. Bauman is professor and chair of American Sign Language and Deaf Studies and coordinator for the Office of Bilingual Teaching and Learning at Gallaudet. Aaron Kheriaty is the director of Residency Training and Medical Education in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, Irvine. Edward Taylor is a professor of education and vice provost and dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs at the University of Washington.

Transforming Higher Education One Conversation at a Time

Transformative Conversations is a pilgrim's handbook into the heart of higher education. Based on the experience of four seasoned professors and administrators, the book provides a guide for creating and sustaining small, conversational communities on campus aimed at deepening the educational experience.

Many professors and administrators entered academia excited by the chance to research what they care most about, share knowledge in ways that genuinely enable students to grow, and help nurture intellectual awakening in society. In too many colleges and universities, however, the pressures to publish, garner grants, train students simply for jobs, build the school's reputation, and otherwise keep the institutional machine humming deplete much of that original enthusiasm and commitment.

Transformative Conversations provides a way back--or, really, a way forward. The authors explain how small conversational groups--animated by open-ended exploration and based on trust, honesty, accountability, and other values--can breakdown the divide between our personal and professional lives, and re-energize our teaching, research, and administration. Furthermore, they offer step-by-step instruction for starting "formation mentoring communities" (FMC) on any campus.

After reading the book, I am committed to starting a FMC at my university and excited to unleash my own and the collective passion of my colleagues in the service of greater self-knowledge, skilled pedagogy, and institutional enhancement.

Good information, but written like an academic

Lots of good information and material to build a discussion group around - but it has that "you gotta read it because it's worthy" style of writing. Too bad - wish an editor had taken a red pencil and made it more readable for those long out of graduate school and no longer required to have good material made boring.

My photos are better because of this inspiring read

I love taking photos of friends and family as well as capturing shots of local people when on holiday and decided to buy this book to get some advice on how to make them better.
I'm glad to say it has already improved my photographs considerably.

Rather than so many books which baffle and intimidate with technical jargon, Henry Carroll's advice is to learn the rules but not worry about having to adhere to them all the time. His approach liberates and inspires you to have confidence in your own photography, which I really appreciated as it means you enjoy the process so much more!

The books' layout is great too: A guideline on each page is accompanied by an inspirational example and often a deconstruction of the image - all presented in a very accessible, easy to understand manner. Some may find the style a little too simple for their tastes but it takes real intelligence to take complicated concepts and explain them in a simple and easy to understand way (without losing any of the content), which this book does fantastically.

As a result I've already been able to apply some "layering", used more interesting crops and compositions and think my "street photography" is also improving. I can now look forward to looking back on photos of my life via much higher quality photos than I might have if I hadn't read this informative, inspiring and fun to read book.

Great Refresher

Great book on tips to photograph people. It really helped me brush up on photography after an extended hiatus. Great way to freshen up quickly, I read it while I waited to see my accountant during tax season.
