The authors of this text did a pretty decent job of explaining a fairly complex subject. It would have been a huge help if a study guide would have been available in order to help the learning process for some of the tougher subjects. The access to the eVal excel template in my opinion is a HUGE bonus! However a little more explanation of how to decipher what to do with the results of eVal would have been appreciated.

Alfred V. Aho is Lawrence Gussman Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University. Professor Aho has won several awards including the Great Teacher Award for 2003 from the Society of Columbia Graduates and the IEEE John von Neumann Medal. �He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the ACM and IEEE.

One of 2 books you will ever need on algorithms

This book and Intro to Algorithms by Corman are perhaps the best 2 books in my hand. All you will ever need to form a firm foundation in algorithms are developed in these 2 books.

I had this book from way back when I was doing by Comp Sci. But recently, I lost this one during a move and had to re-order. So I though I would share my thoughts on it.

This one is much more formal when compared to Corman. However, I find it much easy to follow than Corman's. Also, I find that it becomes even better when you accompany it with some of the implementation books such as Algorithms in C etc.. It would be easier to visualize things when you accompany such a "practical" book along with this one.

TAOCP book could be another one. But I was exposed to these 2 books first before the TAOCP. I find that these 2 books put much heavy emphasize on the algorithms while the TAOCP brings in some of the other programming/dicreet math components that you study anyway in junior classes.

Draw back is that, the material is dated. Obviously, since they were published way back. So some of those optimal algorithms are not so optimal anymore. Both books lacks clear practical approach to some of those very important algorithms used today, especially on processing Graphs, Extendible Hash, Edge Detection, Concurrent Cache Oblivious B Trees etc... Concurrency is a big part of the world today. So I believe, if anyone where to make another books for academic or otherwise on algorithms, these items would be a prerequisite.

For a pure algo book on some of the core fundamental concepts, I have found much success even today with these 2 books. I don't think there are any books that can do better.

Yet another CS classic

This is yet another classic from the Aho Gang!
It sets up a very formal framework for discussing alorithms, beginning at the beginning..an abstract mathematical model of a computer. and builds up the rest of the book using the model for implementation as well as quantification.
A solid framework for the analysis of algorithms is setup. The necessary mathematics is covered, helping in measuring an algorithm's complexity..basically the time and space complexities.
Then it goes on to deal with designing algorithms. the design methodology, with elaborate examples and exercises.
It should be admitted however that this is a solid text for the mathematically oriented. Thats the reason for the 5 stars!
If you want to go a little easy on the formalisms try
"Computer Algorithms, Pseudocode" by Ellis Horowitz, Sartaj Sahni, Sanguthevar Rajasekaran. I found it more pragmatic.

Very effective introduction to algorithms

The book used in my graduate Intro to Algorithms course, and I think the follow-on. While I am obviously not as well read in this subject as many of the other reviewers, I can say "it worked", and indeed worked well. A course that has a weak text or teacher will not inspire... A-H-O/DACA and Prof. Carlson made the material exciting, even to an "architecture guy". My interests in grad school in the early 80's revolved around tessellation automata (aka systolic arrays and other highly regular compute structures) and big steaming fast computer structures. A-H-O provided me with the best understanding of the kinds of problems faced by the computers which interested me the most, and the kinds of tools needed to understand computational impact and algorithmic structuring of solutions to them. I sincerely with I hadn't lost my copy with the hundreds of annotations in the margins.

An absolute delight of a book ... written really clearly and although in an Indian context the inorganic coverage is smaller , it will make ur study from other sources much rewarding if u study it first from here . Physical is wonderful but the highlight Is the mechanistic coverage of organic chemistry . Read this organic and delve deeper into any book and that book will become so rewarding with the background of this one . One last point .- the figures are absolutely wonderful in this book ... Almost explains all the concepts visually ... an amazing and effective learning aid

I wouldn't have gone out of my way to purchase a book on wine... but a friend recommended it and I'm so glad he did. Very well done. The author's humor comes through in spades; while he takes the subject of purchasing and drinking wine seriously, he doesn't take himself too seriously. I felt like I was getting straight talk. At last, I don't feel like I have to have 10 different wine glasses and know which one to use with which wine?! The art and infographics make it very readable and the paper choice makes it a joy to flip through. I'm actually considering giving it as a gift which is big because I'm busy trying to decrease the number of books in my own home. But this one is a pleasure to peruse --- you could read a page or two at a time and come back to it; or use it as a reference at other times. Try it. I think you'll enjoy --- and learn while you do.

Many of us have seen him at the myriad food festivals he attends, but the problem is when you go see him, he is so inundated by beautiful screaming women (is this guy the fifth Beatle?) that you can't get anywhere near him to ask questions. Oldman can probably afford drink like a billionaire. I can't. Thankfully, this book does what it says.

Great Read and Useful Advice for finding joy in all types and aspects of wine

First, this book is a great read, cover-to-cover. If I didn't drink wine (I do), it would still be a joy to read. The observations, insights and stories are worth the price of admission, even if the reader does not plan to put the book's knowledge to its intended use.

Second, the book is a guide to enjoying wine and life. There is a whole world of wine between high-end burgundy and wine with "lipstick, cupcakes or feet" on the label and Oldman urges his readers to explore and enjoy it. In Oldman's world, wine is not merely consumed, it is experienced and his book ensures the entire process can be savored.

Third, Oldman arms the unwary with the tools necessary to enjoy wine and the winebuying experience. Oldman gives the reader tips to assess where a sommelier's allegiances lie and then urges the reader to press the sommelier to be an engaged guide to wines on and off the list. (See off list bottles p. 101)

Definitely worth reading to improve your relationship with your spouse.

It is definitely a good book for couples and it has improved my relationship with my wife. If nothing else it shows you what things your partner is really looking for out of their spouse. I quickly found that my love language was "Acts of Service". Though it might not be sexy or macho to say that, it means more to me to have the dishes and laundry done when I come home after work or have minor home improvements taken care of before I get home. My wife and I have 2 small children and our house is hard to stay clean because every room feels like a mess. We do clean it all the time but it feels like a losing battle. My wife's love language is "Words of Affirmation". As you can tell from all these Amazon reviews I am much more of a writer than I am a talker. My wife is always looking for me to say how much I love and appreciate her because I don't say it often enough.

A big part of improving your relationship with your spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend is to sticking with a date night to make sure you have quality time together. Especially if you have children or a high stress occupation. My wife and I have been together for 10 years and got stuck in the rut of an endless routine of doing everything we could for our kids, followed by daily chores and left little time for ourselves. Committing to 1 date night a week has really helped our relationship and improved our communication.

I recommend the book for sure and found it inspiring and worth reading. All couples can benefit from reading this book. The only downside is I wish it could have been a little longer. The stories from the author are interesting and I would have liked to have heard a bunch of his other examples of couples that he has dealt with. It was a short book and my wife and I finished it in 4 or 5 days and that was reading it slowly. The price is easily affordable. I found it best to photo copy the test quiz at the end instead of writing in the book so we can give the book to any family or friends who are struggling with their relationship.

As a male I assume too much and this book has really helped open my eyes at how to respond to my spouse and focus on her language as well other than winging it and using my language to make those emotional deposits.
Very insightful read.
