Alex Antonov is a very passionate technologist with a hunger to learn new tools, languages, techniques, and concepts behind enterprise application design. His specialty lies in designing highly scalable distributed large-scale enterprise systems, which he has been successfully doing for the last 12 years. He is also a frequent presenter on the topics of architecture and design at conferences such as UberConf, JavaOne, and Spring 2GX. Alex joined Orbitz Worldwide in 2004, and in his current role of Senior Principal Engineer, he is responsible for providing technical leadership and guidance in the development of foundational technologies, core libraries, and APIs for enterprise-wide use, as well as establishing and maintaining common design principles and standards used within the company and integration of new software development practices within the development community. He has extensive experience in enterprise architecture designing distributed systems, and spends a lot of time doing object domain modeling and focusing on domain-driven design and behavior-driven development and testing. Prior to that, Alex was a lead engineer in the same team that was responsible for web application frameworks and developing common practices and additional functionality on top of Spring MVC and Webflow. He has been a long-time Spring user, starting with Spring 2.0.8 and all the way to the latest and greatest―Spring Boot. Great information that you probably won't get from other Spring Boot books

I recently starting learning Spring Boot and it's been very interesting. Developers will know though that writing the code and having it running locally isn't even half the job. Customisation for environments, deployment tasks and adding monitoring etc. can add just as much time.
That's why I was very pleased with this book, I was half expecting it to be a series of small tutorials about coding with Spring Boot but it takes a very unusual approach that covers the edge cases of development and has a strong focus on what Spring Boot brings to the table. The Application Testing chapter is very good and cover using Mockito, Cucumber and Spock.
The deployment chapters cover building an executable jar, accessing environment specific variables and most interesting for me, creating Docker images. It also covers application monitoring, another aspect Spring Boot gives you for free.
I'm still reading through the book but it's definitely one that's full of information that you won't normally get in development books. It's well written and easy to dive into because the chapters are all self contained.
If you're interested in Spring Boot, I strongly recommend this in addition to one about developing in Spring Boot.

Thus, when Charles Dow writes in an essay titled "Booms and Busts" that "There is a pronounced difference between bull markets that are made by manipulation and those that are made by the public," you perk up. Got both CD version and the hardcover. Get the hardcover since the audio has only a small fraction of the content

The readings included in the CD were excellent, but the vast majority wasn't included. This book was way too abridged in the audio preparation. For that reason I suggest getting the physical book instead of audio. I got both and will confirm that every chapter of this anthology was excellent.

My favorite segment is by Edwin Lefevre called "Vanished Billions." Lefevre is my favorite financial writer of the 20s and 30s. Wow, this one is good! It's not in the CD though.

One of my favorites is Selling Short by Martin Zweig. His explanation of trading rules and the difficulty in following resonated with me. It was interesting to hear the reading from Mario Gabelli called Grand Slam Hitting. Whereas this book was compiled in the 90s based on writings from earlier times, Gabelli had interesting predictions on the future that turned out to be mainly accurate.

This is an anthology, a collection of writings by notable authors. I got the feeling that money was never the primary or original motivator for them. They were intensely interested in solving problems having to do with investing, speculating and economics.

Audiobook version is entertaining!

My local library has the OverDrive eAudio version of this book, and because the topic can be rather dry to read, the narration does a good job of pacing me, and getting me through the volume.

The content is not much different from other books or audio-books of the genre, but because I don't work in the financial milieu, it helps to reinforce the type of thing and expected reaction for people living a "financial lifestyle"!

A New Approach

This book introduces geometry in a whole new approach. It explains the concepts thru exercises which I really admire as a self-study student. This book is much better compared to the plain o' books you usually see in school. Really recommend it.

Beautiful, but ...

I first would like to say that I do not disrespect the artist/author of the book, I think her artwork is great and I even preordered the book as soon as it was listed.
This book is gorgeous and practical. Her one style of faux calligraphy is very pretty and the examples are very clear.
BUT, there is only one style of "cursive" hand lettering demonstrated and three block letter or print examples. BUT, the blank pages.... About 45% of the book is blank pages, not to mention all the white space. It makes for a very clean look on a book but it feels like they could have printed a booklet and told you to buy a realm of paper for practice instead. Even with the printed guidelines for practice the amount of blank pages is excessive. Pages 96-110 are ENTIRELY BLANK but for the page number, and so is almost half of the book.
It is introductory so it is strictly for beginners.
The cover is very hard and the wire bound feature is very nice for practicing. If you use the pages for writing you don't need an extra notebook.

Lacking Actual Teaching & Helpful Content

I love the author's work and hate to write a poor review but this book is a poor teacher of lettering. There are MANY practice pages but little instruction. Really it's just a book of faux calligraphy practice pages with arrows showing the direction of the letters and telling you to pick up your pen between letters. This information can be widely accessed by free lettering sources. In purchasing a $30.00 book I expect more inside information, tips and tricks and showing me HOW she achieves her style of lettering, etc... For example, the flourishes pages literally just tells you that flourishes and illustrations are great to add to your lettering then shows you a 2" x 2" example of the author's own "Bless Your Heart" design (with zero instructions on how she achieved it) and has about a 6"x3" area next to that design that says "Practice Here." So essentially you can just google "chalk full of love bless your heart" and see the image of that design and practice it yourself and you've received the same amount of info on flourishing as she gives in the book. Unfortunately this book is a well marketed and branded exterior of book with little helpful content within.

This book is beautiful! I agree with some ot the previous posts that there ARE a lot of empty pages but I like that because I never seem to have a book and paper in the same place. And, there is an additional pdf packet available with extra things like combining letters that is super useful as well. It is really good for beginners.

Reminds me of reading Conan as a kid, but better!

Conan the Barbarian as a comedy? Well, it works. The witty dialog will take keep you smirking as you follow this tale of Vengar the Barbarian (the second with hopefully many more to come), in search of his oversized sword, leading up to an ending that wasn't quite what I expected. Certainly I will never think about goat's milk in the same way again.

Thanks to Ted Boone for the correction, I really need to go back and read the first Vengar story!

Lots of fun in a quick read

Like the first Vengar story, this was a quick, fun read that brightened up a boring afternoon. It doesn't take itself seriously and plays around with the cliches of the genre while still delivering an enjoyable swords and sorcery story. I look forward to further installments in Vengar's adventures!

"Morning came upon the steppe like a drunken sailor: clumsy, premature and with nonetheless great satisfaction." When you start right off the bat with some of the silliest, deep purple prose you've ever read, you know what you're in for. It's like reading a lost Mel Brooks treatment written by Leslie Neilsen.

Vengar's been looking for his mighty sword, Ridikulon... which he somehow misplaced during a night of revelry, and takes on the services of Shakal the Thief to help him reclaim it. A walking column of an evil warlord, Columnar, controls the Glum Horde, and needs the sword to revive the legendary Sunder Man and take over Sunderia. Why anyone would want to I've no idea, given the quality of life there. I mean, c'mon- the people live in buildings looking like the illegitimate child of a tent and a hut (hent? tut?) and the goat's milk they drink is best not mentioned again. Regardless, it can all only lead to an epically epic struggle of epic proportions.

If you're a fan of fantasy, witty satire or ever wondered what Eye of Argon could've been with some coherence, this is one for you.
