Nezahualcoyotl (1402-1472), the "poet-king" of Texcoco, has been described as one of the most important pre-Hispanic figures in Nahua history. This, as Jongsoo Lee argues, subsequently leads to a misrepresentation of the history, religion, literature, and politics of pre-Hispanic Mexico that are altered to support such images of Nezahualcoyotl.

Lee provides a new assessment of Nezahualcoyotl that critically examines original codices and poetry written in Nahuatl alongside Spanish chronicles in an effort to paint a more realistic portrait of the legendary Aztec figure. Urging scholars away from sources that reinforce a Judeo-Christian perspective of pre-Hispanic history, Lee offers a revision of the colonial images of Nahua history and culture that have continued over the last five hundred years.

it is so hard to maintain mythical or even real personages on pedestals these days, no one is safe; in this case it is the benign, tolerant, poet / law giver, religious thinker and philosopher that was Nezahualcoyotl, the Tlatonani of Texcoco.

In his work, Professor Lee knocks out the two main supports ,named Torguemada and Ixtlixochitl for the near mythical status of Nezhualcoyotl which brings him to the level of near human. While this is a disappointment for the imagination and while its hard to drop the rose coloured glasses, the work very helpful in understanding the Mexica/Aztec world as it actually was.

Moreover, it is a cautionary tale asking for critical thinking when assessing works of past chroniclers.

Also I found it interesting that HB Nicholson in his work "Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl" almost 40 years earlier made similar observations.

Important reinterpretation

This handsome volume offers a challenging reinterpretation of a legendary (and historical) figure of Pre-Columbian Mexico, Ruler, poet, philosopher, and supposedly a religious reformer as well, Nezahualcoyotl is today a heroic emblem of resurgent indigenismo: the Platonic philosopher king of the ancient Nahua people. Lee shows that much of this image is based on the colonialist ideals of Spanish writers and their indigenous accomplices. These writers were seeking for evidence of anticipations of Christianity among the natives, and they thought that they had found such a phenomenon in the "unknown god" of this ruler.

I am not a specialist in this field of study. I suspect that Lee's revisionist interpretation has evoked a vigorous response in Mexico. Yet it cannot be discounted. This book is a very useful stimulus to thinking.

Paul Bradt has a BS in Computer Science. He currently works as a contractor developing various computer program types, especially video games. He has experimented with the Arduino system and believes it to be an excellent tool for developing an understanding of how electronic components and hardware interact in integrated systems, and it is useful as a teaching aid in learning the basics of computer programming. He likes to perform sophisticated troubleshooting of computer problems and has found that the on-line resources associated with Arduino can be a great help for novice users to get their experiments operating quickly and effectively. David Bradt has a BS in Mechanical Engineering and many years of experience in basic heat transfer. Examples include aerospace hardware heat transfer systems and component testing for high reliability mechanical industrial equipment at -40 degrees to 120 degrees F. He also provided assistance on the development and completion of over 30 science fair projects from grade school to high school levels. Two of those projects went all the way to the State level competitions, both of which had aspects of heat transfer associated with them. He now focuses on risk and reliability of complex systems.

This book is an excellent reference and very clearly explains how to set-up and conduct multiple experiments using the arduino data acquisition system. Also, included are very helpful examples of code. I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in heat transfer or science fair projects.

Informative, but not delightful

I'm a massive fanboy of Nancy Duarte. But I was not frothing at the mouth in anticipation of her new book after she revealed that much of it was contained material from her previous two books.

Much of HBR Guide to Persuasive Presentations is an executive summary of Duarte's previous two books. As I went through, I often thought, "There's the presentation structure from Resonate.... ooh, and there are diagram types from Slide:ology." That said, even in sections that cover old ideas, there are new examples. The book is right up to date, using examples from earlier this year.

The last two sections of the book - "Delivery" and "Impact" - are the ones of most interest, because they have the most new material. There's a good section on giving webinars and other remote presentations online. How can you give a presentation that people will listen to... when people are much more likely to check email during that time? There's a discussion on working with an interpreter to deliver a presentation to people who don't speak your language.

Online crowds might be interested in her sections on following-up presentations with social media tools. For example, she encourages speakers to create a hashtag for their presentations - but not "canned" tweets. She cites research that people want to determine what's important, so suggesting tweets to the audience makes it less likely people will use it. There's also good discussion about the pros and cons of monitoring the backchannel during a conference, for example.

HBR Guide to Persuasive Presentations is a very different beast from Slide:ology and Resonate. The size of the book is something you can readily throw in a backpack or purse, rather than the oversized trade paperback of the predecessors. The production is spare. The pages and pictures are all black and white. The contrast to the visually lush reading experience of Slide:ology or Resonate is dramatic. For me, Persuasive Presentations was less, well, persuasive because it didn't have that depth and intensity.

As an academic, I'm disappointed that when Duarte talks about research and gives examples, you're on your own to try your luck with Google to find them. There are no references or URLs anywhere in this book. I'm hoping that this might be remedied in the ebook, but the product description makes it appear that the ebook's advantage is a video rather than links.

Each section is short. Each one is about the length of a blog post. Indeed, some of the sections have been put up as blog posts on the Harvard Business Review website, and because they can use colour, they look much better.

Despite the brevity, Duarte makes this a more personal book than her previous ones in many cases. She sprinkles personal anecdotes throughout. I get the impression that she's gained a lot more experiences to share as she's transitioned from a "behind the scenes" presentation designer to an "on the stage" keynote presenter.

If you have not bought either of Nancy Duarte's previous books, Persuasive Presentations is excellent value: you can get this one for less than half the price of the other two combined. But this is not a "must own" like Slide:ology and Resonate are. HBR Guide to Persuasive Presentations informed me, but it didn't delight me.

Best of the bunch

This is really the only Duarte you need to buy, if you're looking at her body of work and wondering. No, it doesn't have all the layout stuff that Slideology has, but after reading all her stuff (library and purchased), I feel like this would have been the one to focus on (although it was published AFTER I had read through all her others). I feel it's the most practical, and jettisons some of the fluff you find in her other books. I have highlighted, dog-eared and stickie-taped throughout this whole book.

This is one of the first volumes in a new series of anthologies of articles previously published in Harvard Business Review or, in this instance, a series of tutorials provided by Nancy Duarte in which she shares information, insights, and counsel about how to prepare and then deliver persuasive, high-impact presentations.

As is also true of volumes in other such series, notably HBR Essentials, HBR Must Reads, and HBR Management Tips, HBR Guides offer great value in several ways. Here are two: Cutting-edge thinking from 25-30 sources in a single volume at a price (about $12.50 from Amazon in the bound version) for a fraction of what article reprints would cost.

The material was selected and to help those who read this book to improve their abilities to convince members of an audience why the given ideas matter to them, win over tough crowds, balance emotional and analytical appeal of the given "message," craft memorable phrases and examples, create powerful visuals when needed, strike the right tone, hold an audience's attention, and measure the impact of the presentation.

Lest We Forget.

James Clavell is renowned for his works such as _Shogun_ and _Noble House_. This darkly autobiographical novel was, so far as I am aware, his first literary work. It remains his best.
Clavell was a prisoner of the Japanese. He was held at the infamous Changi prison on the eastern end of Singapore island as described in the novel. Like the protagonist, Peter Marlowe, Clavell came from a good family, though due to his eyesight he was in the Royal Artillery, not the Royal Air Force (a little harmless wish-fulfillment, there).
I think the novel impresses so many readers due to its stark simplicity and forthrightness, particularly in describing the moral dilemmas that confront Marlowe. With the issue of survival in the balance, does morality become relative? Marlowe concludes that the only man who could answer his questions, his father, is dead-- killed on the Murmansk run. But just as Changi is rebirth for Marlowe, perhaps it is the King-- the trader with the Japanese-- who becomes Marlowe's father and answers those questions.
There are many, many layers to this book. I have read it many times and have always walked away with something new. As with the Changi experience, itself, I sense that there is never complete resolution.
Clavell died several years ago. I hope that he found peace.
Add this work to testaments like Iris Chang's, _The Rape of Nanking_, as a remembrance of what the Japanese did to the defeated.

This book really makes you think!

Of all Clavell's books, this has always been my favorite. I will not deny that Clavell tends to use the same story and characters in every novel (compare shogun with tai-pan and noble house). I love all his books (even gai-jin which few seem to enjoy), but King Rat is the best. It really makes you think about human nature, and what's really important in life. All these people grew up in a certain lifestyle, and suddenly and thrown together in a POW camp, and under brutal circumstances. I have done research on POW camps at this time,and the findings are not pleasant, so it really is interesting to see how people change, and what they really value. Seeing as how Mr. Clavell spent time in Changi himself, all that we see in King Rat is an extension of that, and so you can really appreciate what he endured. It for these above reasons that I truly enjoyed this book above his other great novels, and why I have read several times over.

Harrowing, Unforgettable...King Rat rules.

I cannot believe the previous reviewer and I had the same book. King Rat stands up there with the classic Ivan Denisovich any way you read it...for the great story, or for its cynical look into men's souls. This is truly Clavell's best work, no silly Ninja antics, no inane super TaiPans or Anjin-Sans and their ridiculous MegaMistresses...just a book about real men in real hell, simply written and therefore all the more powerful.

King Rat is a young, cocky American civilian who finds himself drafted into the Army during WWII, and ends up a POW at the notorious Changi camp. But the King isn't an ordinary POW, he is the finagler par excellance. The savvy corporal trades whatever he gets and makes a profit however he can. And he holds sway over the corrupt POW officers because he deals for them on the black market, exchanging wedding rings and wrist watches for food -- with the King always getting his cut. Is the King wrong to take money or food as his price? The officers, honorable British gentleman, have been known to double deal themselves, little tricks like giving King a fake Rolex to trade -- knowing full well the guard would punish King severely, maybe kill him, if the fraud was discovered. King isn't fooled. He just cheats right back, skimming a little more off the top.

According to the history books, Changi wasn't the worst of the Japanese POW camps. That honor is held by a place known only as 4-B, a place where 300 Australian soldiers found out what hell was like on a bad day (and if the subject interests you, this relatively unknow POW camp is worth reading about). But Changi was bad enough. British and Australians, along with a handful of yanks, faced Japanese inhumanity, constant starvation, disease, dangerous work, lack of medical care, and the kind of wet tropical heat that rots everything it touches. Even the true blue, God Save the Queen officers are corrupted by it, stealing food from the enlisted men and then playing bridge with clear consciences.

Clavell has a great way of illustrating what most of us already know: the loudest braying patriot/hero/saviour is usually the most cowardly and venal. There is nobility, however, in the worst of us...and Clavell paints us a picture that is unforgettable.

Given this degradation, what do we make of Corporal King. Is he the only truly uncorrupted soul at the camp? At least he's honest about his double dealing. And there's another side to King. Unlike the officers who eat in secret at the expense of their men, King shares his food willingly. Onone hand, he uses his friends callously, but he does his best to save those he can -- all things being equal. It's his blatant disregard for moral fakery that tarnishes him more than his actions.

King befriends a naive young English pilot, all upper class bravado and stiff upper lip. At first, King seeks to use the pilot as an interpreter, but the gradually the two become friends. The friendship makes him vulnerable.

King Rat looks in great detail at what men do what they have nothing left to lose. Some survive...one may even thrive. The rest cope and get by with whatever is inside them and a little luck. I hate to get all preachy here, because this is one hell of an exciting book. It's loaded with adventure. Although there is not enough explicit torture for the previous reviewer's tastes,I don't think most people would find it tame. This is not, however, a string 'em up and lash them book. It's about survival. Read it on any level you want, but by all means, read it.

Starla Rich is an author, freelance writer, health blogger, and founder of Encouragement Enterprises - an organization that began with a simple concept - an "encouragement movement" created as a venue to pay forward encouragement and hope she has received in her own life. A JOURNEY worth taking!

"Have you ever been in a situation where you feel you've done all you know how to do, have done the right thing and still find yourself stumbling along your path in the dark?" This then, is the perfect book for you! If you haven't been in this situation then this is the perfect book to help you understand others who are struggling! This is also the perfect book to GIVE to others who may need help in lifting themselves out of the hurtful experiences that manage to exist in life!

Starla does the most exquisite job of winding us around the beautiful 'Southern' countryside of her heart and taking us on a journey of her honest self reflection. She does this in such a way that many of my book page corners are bent up and my pages are marked with red pen as I learn about myself and want to remember her wisdom.

You will relish her little stories of past people, places and events and how she weaves them into morals to help us here and now. She tells us about her little freckle-faced childhood and the woman she has become despite the many trials that were thrust upon her. Even though we've never met outside of the pages of her book, I love my new family with Maw-Maw, Paw-Paw, mama Rich and Josh. All of their lives and wisdom helped form the pages of Starla's heart and therefore mine. This book is truly a gift of the heart and one journey you should definitely take! I would give it 10 stars! Highly recommended!!

I appreciate the title of this book very much. It says all about its contents.
Journey Within My Heart
It’s a book about Journey. Starla Rich was 50+ when writing this work and she had quite a life journey behind her.
The word Within indicates it’s about our internal world, not some travel guide. It talks about the things which are most basic and valuable for humans: emotions, memories and experiences.

I had the most problems with the My part of the title and the book. Starla doesn’t preach about generalities. It’s a book about her life, her journey and her experiences. It unfortunately may narrow the circle of readers, but it provides the level of insight into the human soul impossible otherwise.

And it’s all about Heart. Her transparency is beyond amazing. She opens the gate to her heart and shares what’s inside. She is not afraid to become vulnerable in order to encourage others in their life journey.

And in this era, such a reflective title is so rare! As an author myself, I know all too well the temptation to use tricks and slogans to enchain potential reader’s attention. Starla Rich is above that.

Why “My” may cause the problem…
Let’s go straight to minuses of the book, so we can delight in its positives later on.
This book is deeply personal. So deeply in fact, that it may thwart a reader from wading across the ‘personal’ part to the ‘universal’ one.
This is the first book of this author and it shows here and there. The paragraphs are much, much too verbose for my taste. Many times I was desperately looking for the break in the stream of words to catch my breath and just ponder what I’ve just read. In fact that was my biggest issue with this book.
Maybe it was just the impression provoked by the length of individual paragraphs, but in my opinion, Starla rambles too much. She could cut some corners here and there and go to the point sooner.

Those two issues make it relatively hard for me to through the beginning of the book. And it is the most important part! If the reader will be willing to wade through the introduction, he can endure some wandering about and linger for what’s later on. But if not…
I went through this initial blockade only because I knew something about the author in advance, before reading the book. If I hadn’t, I don’t think I would have found the motivation to do so. For me, the “My” part was the reason to keep reading. For someone who doesn’t know the author, it is more likely to stir “And who cares?” reaction and giving up on the lecture
And that would be a shame, because this book is good. No, it’s not good, it’s wonderful. No, it’s not; the proper word is “Great.”

Language
English is not my first language, but even I can appreciate the skillful craftsmanship Starla has over words and sentences. Her language is artful, subtle and beautiful. Reading this book is like listening to soothing music. She doesn’t just tell the story, she paints it with her words, so vividly that I couldn’t help seeing it happening through my own eyes.
She narrates a few times abject events from her past in the way that you can feel her pain and simultaneously be far away from it in time and space.
She is an artist of the written word. Reading “Journey Within My Heart” is a joy in itself.

By the way, I fell in love with the South just imbibing its pieces through the author’s writing.

Layers
But it’s just the first, superficial layer of this book’s virtues. The other one is openness and transparency. Starla shares her personal story with total strangers with courage and divine lack of fear.
I’m a “self-analysis” fanatic. I spend at least 10 minutes every day writing down an analysis of my own self. But I’m amazed by the depth of Starla’s thoughts about seemingly trifling encounters or scenes from the movies. Mundane, daily situations for her are inspiration to ponder the greatest mysteries of life.
This personal approach separates the book’s message from resemblance to a stiff sermon. Many times I couldn’t help but nodding in agreement with her conclusions drawn from these personal tidbits.

Wisdom
And all I said about the book so far is just another layer. Because the core of “Journey Within My Heart” is wisdom. The further you go into the book, the greater enlightenment you experience.

I believe wisdom is transforming one’s own experience into meaningful lessons. The author experienced a lot in her life, both good and evil. She encountered it in others and in herself. That makes her so relatable to us all. However her ability to digest a meaning from these encounters is extraordinary.

She taught me about the realms of the Heart: relationships, self-love, self-pity, courage, self-examination and divine providence through her own example. She provoked me to search for similar lessons in my past, in my soul.

And in the end she fulfilled her mission. She encouraged me.

Only halfway through and _MUST_ review this amazing book!

I wanted to wait until I finished this book to review it. But I just can't wait! From being compelled to tears within the first several pages, to being totally in the grip of the storytelling of Starla Rich's difficult relationships, to the birth of her child that fueled the birth of her courage to stand up for her own life, this book has already made an impression on my life and given me the impetus to continue my journey to my own heart.

Do your heart a favor and read this lovely book. You will be encouraged, enlightened, and emboldened by her courage and wisdom. Very highly recommended!!
