Important strides have been made in understanding the pathophysiologic basis of many inflammatory conditions in recent years, but rheumatology remains a discipline in which diagnosis is rooted in the medical history skillfully extracted from the patient, the careful physical examination, and the discriminating use of laboratory tests and imaging. Moreover, selection of the most appropriate therapy for patients with rheumatic diseases also remains heavily reliant upon clinical experience. Medical disciplines such as rheumatology that depend significantly upon clinical wisdom are prone to the development of systems of ‘Pearls’ and ‘Myths,’ related to the diseases they call their own, a ‘Pearl’ being a nugget of truth about the diagnosis or treatment of a particular disease that has been gained by dint of clinical experience and a ‘Myth’ being a commonly held belief that influences the practice of many clinicians – but is false. This book will pool together the clinical wisdom of seasoned, expert rheumatologists who participate in the care of patients with autoimmune diseases, systemic inflammatory disorders, and all other rheumatic conditions.

Review
From the reviews:
“This is a complete review of basic rheumatology presented in an easy-to-read format. … It appears to be written for medical students, residents, rheumatology fellows, and general practitioners in family and internal medicine. … Numerous high-quality color photographs aid in the visualization of many of the described clinical manifestations. The unique presentation, using pearls and myths, lends an easy-to-read style to the book.” (Kristi Kuhn, Doody’s Review Service, March, 2010)
“This book is fun to read and use. … It offers valuable insights applicable to daily practice and enhances many teaching points with evidence-based support, both pro and con. … I give this text my highest recommendation to all those practicing and teaching rheumatology. A Clinician's Pearls and Myths in Rheumatology is satisfying to read and seems to offer more practical information for the clinician practicing rheumatology than most of the online or print textbooks that I regularly refer to.” (Robert J. Quinet, Journal of the American Medical Association, Vol. 304 (6), August, 2010)
From the Back Cover
A Clinician's Pearls and Myths in Rheumatology is a rich assemblage of the clinical wisdom of expert rheumatologists from a whole range of specialties and nationalities. It examines the nuggets of wisdom, or ‘pearls’ gained from collective clinical experience about the diagnosis or treatment of various diseases whilst also aiming to debunk certain myths that have influenced the practice of many clinicians but have proven false.
The pithy style of writing ensures that the reader thoroughly enjoys delving into this trove of diagnostic and therapeutic guidance. In addition, an abundance of illustrations, including 300 clinical photographs, significantly augments the reader’s understanding of these ‘pearls’.
With contributions from 126 authors across the various subspecialties in rheumatology, and comprising a total of more than 1400 Pearls and Myths, this book truly provides the corpus of current clinical wisdom in rheumatology.
Dr John H. Stone, MD MPH is Clinical Director of Rheumatology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA. He has pioneered a great deal of clinical research in rheumatology, particularly in the area of systemic vasculitis.

A great gem of a book!
By Rahul
This is a great book for a practicing rheumatologist. The chapters are generally short enough to read in one sitting. There are many great photos and radiographic findings to complement the text. The myths and pearls are for the most part quite practical. There are several great myths and pearls that can impress fellows, residents, and students, such as the description of Bonnet syndrome in giant cell arteritis. As a practicing academic rheumatologist, I found a few items in the book that I disagree with, such as the claim that colchicine is not effective in Behcet's. Also, as a 1st edition, there are a few typos that will hopefully be fixed in future editions.
The material in this book can greatly enhance an attending's roundsmanship on the wards or in clinic. Would highly recommend this book for any rheumatology or general medicine attending, or rheumatology fellow who wants to stand out among the crowd and improve one's care of rheumatology patients.

This is a great book. I read it twice and it has altered the way I think about medicine. The high quality ( remember high quality !) clinical heuristics pertinent to daily rheumatology practice is presented in a palatable format as myths and pearls. Useful information from evidence based medicine is presented with some references date back to 1970s. Good for rheumatology in training exams as well.
It should be in everyone's library and I am actively waiting for a new edition.

This is a great book for anyone involved in the practice of rheumatology. It presents the cumulative wealth of knowledge of many well known figures in the field. It's written in a very accessible style and can be read relatively quickly for a textbook. The book covers a huge variety of diagnoses, including some that wouldn't typically be consider rheumatologic, such as amyloidosis.
My only complaint with this book is the editing, which is surprisingly bad. There are frequent grammatical errors, some of which lead to confusion in trying to sort out whether a given statement is in fact a "myth" or a "pearl." On one page there is even a line that reads "note to editor, could refer to the scleroderma section..." which was clearly not meant to be published! Despite this, still a great book, but hopefully future editions will be edited more carefully.
