A picture isn't worth a thousand of Wilbur Smith's words

I almost put this book down early on because the pedophilia was disgusting. I pushed ahead because I'd heard good things from others and eventually heard the door close behind me and I couldn't leave the exotic and enchanting world that was being verbally painted with vast and precise vocabulary and a flare for visual intrigue. The characters are defined and colored by both deed and dialogue, and the culture comes to such life that I could smell the unwashed armies and hear clang of bronze and taste the desert dust in my mouth as I read. Wilbur Smith is a literary necromancer who puts words in the mouths of those long dead and makes them as vital and relevant as today's news. He sought out my emotional range and tested the limits. Hours don't turn to minutes in this fast read because time simply vanishes and the reader exists between the book covers and the current world and its passing is somewhere else and irrelevant. There are characters so despicable as to draw one's vengeance quest past the words and on into the fictional world where I found my spirit sword-in-hand seeking a reckoning. It is brutal, gory, and not always historically accurate, but Smith has done enough homework to keep us safely tucked into our suspension of disbelief. I don't recommend this for the squeamish, prudes, or pussies as this is high octane nasty at times, so if you are a Hallmark TV Channel addict, shun this story with the sign of the cross and stay out of Wilbur's world. However you will miss out on a powerful three way love story that will wring your emotions dry while it wets your eyes. The journey is educational, illuminating, and an entrancing escape.

Oh Mr Smith I have read many of your works but have overlooked this masterpiece until now and have been totally captivated from the hippopotamus until the final battle with the kykos but then to have the queen die broke my heart. Meanwhile I had my wife s beautiful Egyptian helper Amy read the first chapter and she fell in love with it so I ordered an hard copy for her children to enjoy

I could not put this book down -- after getting through the first 2 chapters. In fact, I lost interest in the first couple of chapters and put it aside for 3 months until I was captive on an airplane and desperate for something other than the in-flight magazine! I decided to take a stab at the book again---and wow---I could not put it down. I became completely captivated by the main characters, loved the story-telling perspective and was totally immersed in the imagery he painted. The author was very adept at developing the characters, he brought many perspectives of Egyptian life, politics and relationships to life. I did not want the book to end and am looking forward to the next one!
