The Ancient Egyptian Book of Thoth: A Demotic Discourse on Knowledge and Pendant to the Classical Hermetica, by Richard Jasnow, Karl-Theod

The composition, which the editors entitle the "Book of Thoth", is preserved on over forty Graeco-Roman Period papyri from collections in Berlin, Copenhagen, Florence, New Haven, Paris, and Vienna. The central witness is a papyrus of fifteen columns in the Berlin Museum. Written almost entirely in the Demotic script, the Book of Thoth is probably the product of scribes of the "House of Life", the temple scriptorium. It comprises largely a dialogue between a deity, usually called "He-who-praises-knowledge" (presumably Thoth himself) and a mortal, "He-who-loves-knowledge". The work covers such topics as the scribal craft, sacred geography, the underworld, wisdom, prophecy, animal knowledge, and temple ritual. Particularly remarkable is one section (the "Vulture Text") in which each of the 42 nomes of Egypt is identified with a vulture. The language is poetic; the lines are often clearly organized into verses. The subject-matter, dialogue structure, and striking phraseology raise many issues of scholarly interest; especially intriguing are the possible connections between this Egyptian work, in which Thoth is called "thrice-great", and the classical Hermetic Corpus, in which Hermes Trismegistos plays the key role. The first volume comprises interpretative essays, discussion of specific points such as the manuscript tradition, script, and language. The core of the publication is the transliteration of the Demotic text, translation, and commentary. A consecutive translation, glossary, bibliography, and indices conclude the first volume. The second volume contains photographs of the papyri, almost all of which reproduce their original size.

Superb Erudite Magisterial Scholarship: A Must Read!
By John E.D.P. Malin
For those serious students of ancient Egyptian learning & scholarship this book is a must read. Competent modern learning is extremely expensive. It is better to read well, than to read much. The price of the book [around $250.00 US Dollars] should not be a hinder to its purchase. Merely save your disposable cash over several months.

I cannot believe that there has not been more reviews of this extraordinary feat of scholarship. The authors labored fifteen years to produce this editio princeps. Professor Richard Jasnow is at John Hopkins University and Karl-Theodor Zauzich is at the University of Wurzburg. These first-rate scholars have performed a massive task of organizing the pertinent Egyptian papyri MSS at Berlin, Copenhagen, Florence, Louvre, Vienna & New Haven (Yale). The scholarly world of Egyptologists have been waiting since 1922 for its production [See Patrick Boylan's "Thoth, the Hermes of Egypt. A Study of Some Aspects of Theological Thought in Ancient Egypt" Oxford University Press (1922)].

The Egyptian God, Thoth, was the God of academic scribal learning of the Egyptian hieratic priesthood, especially, for the cult of the god Amun-Re at Thebes (whence our own Roman Catholic mystery of the Trinity devolves via the theologian, Origen [Origenes Adamantius, ca. AD 184/5--254/5, see the massive 3-volume work of E. de Faye, Origene, 1923-8, French Edition]). This learned work will illuminate the Late Period "codification of knowledge" of the Lector priests [Eg. hry-hb.t] and the Scholar-magicians [Eg. rh-ihy.w or rh-ihy] who reduced their encyclopedic "wissens-Literatur" to cosmological, geographical, theological & mythological texts.

The text has plates of the Demotic and Hieratic MSS; the earliest go back to the Ptolemaic Period (which ended with the suicide of Cleopatra VII (69-30 BCE). This treatise is a welcome addition to the Nun-Cosmology (Mark Smith), Book of the Temple (J. Quack) and the Le papyrus Salt 825 editions. The distinctions of genre (decorum) based on script were breaking down by the later Ptolemaic Period.

These writings, which the two scholars have organized brilliantly for our reading and studying, illuminate temple rituals, underworld texts, wisdom compositions and sacred geographical works or onomastic Vulture Texts in the late Egyptian tongue. They were motivated by "A Fear of Forgetting" [German, Angst des Vergessens]; they are a product of authentic priestly Thothic Wisdom. Indeed, when you read this book you will possess the "lamp of prophecy" [Eg. hbs n sl3]! The Greeks in the 5th century BCE made the study of philosophy the core of their educational paideia (culture). Here you see where the Greeks pinched that notion [Greek, philosophos, "lover of wisdom"; Eg. mr-rh, "lover of knowledge/wisdom"]! Here, also, we see where St. John stole his notion "And the Word was made Flesh" [John 1:14 New Testament]: "Philosopher, he says: 'Let one command for me the Word which gives birth to the prophets// that I may cause that they become pregnant in my Flesh.' " [Eg. mr-rh, d=f my hn=w n=y n3 hy.w nt ms sl3.w ti=y iwl=w hn (...iw)f.w].

I cannot emphasize enough the extraordinary range and competence of this learned treatise. I would demand that any competent scholar of Aegyptiaca is compelled to buy it!

It is my pleasure to endorse it for a wider reading public!
